"To lose her on a morning commute at an intersection the city has explicitly documented as dangerous for years is just an unmitigated tragedy, a systemic failure." Deaths like Louisa's occur because our leaders prioritize the convenience of drivers over the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

Musk says not a single person has died due to him axing USAID. Sadly, part of my job involves tracking aid spending. So here’s a thread with just some of the people who lost their lives because of USAID cuts

NOAA cannot just rely on outside providers for weather data. The costs of deploying and operating upper air, radar, weather station, and buoy networks, and other sensing platforms like satellites are far higher than the $27 - 30M Congress wants to give NMP. insideclimatenews.org/news/0108202...
Sofar Ocean Intelligence, Tomorrow.io, Black Swift Technologies and Saildrone are among other startups with innovative technologies and AI forecasting models that are increasingly supplying NOAA with critical atmospheric and oceanic data through its Mesonet Program.“The mandate of the government is not ours,” said Tim Janssen, a co-founder of Sofar, which has created a network of buoys that deploy from vessels and aircraft with sensors to monitor ocean conditions. “It would be impossible for us to spend millions of dollars to do something just for societal benefit, [when] there isn’t a direct business case.”

Awful. More horrible science news "The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) learned yesterday that the Department of Defense (DoD) will stop processing & delivering the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data no later than 30 June 2025."
Screenshot from NSIDC that says: "Dear Colleague:

The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) learned yesterday that the Department of Defense (DoD) will stop processing and delivering the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data no later than 30 June 2025. The SSMIS data are used as input for the following NSIDC DAAC-produced data sets, which will therefore stop processing no later than 30 June 2025:"

NEW: The Trump admin has informed NOAA that two buildings that are critical for weather forecasting will have their leases canceled. If this comes to pass, it's a really big deal. Includes weather fcst nerve center in College Park, Md.: www.axios.com/2025/03/03/d...

Happy to share that my work in collaboration with Leia Otterstatter and Prof. Scott Salesky was just published in Geophysical Research Letters! In this article we used a suite of LES to study the representativeness of measurements by Uncrewed Aircraft Systems in the CBL. doi.org/10.1029/2024...

My top Super Bowl memory is when Musk tweeted “Go Eagles” in 2023 from the game and then deleted it after a similar tweet from Biden got more engagement. Then he flew to Twitter HQ and demanded his workers find out why his posts were doing poorly, starting a multi-day fact finding mission.
Deleted Elon musk tweet from February 2023 that reads “go eagles”

Hey just for what it’s worth, do you know where every single one of NWS’s daily radiosondes come from? Germany and Finland. 🤷‍♂️

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942. I know. I was there in those camps.

Americans will go on vacation to a place that isn’t a car sewer, walk and take public transit for 8-12 hrs. a day, notice a change in their health, and attribute it to “they must not have the Illuminati chemicals here”
