We are kicking off this year's spooky seasons mini with a brief history of the town on fire. 📣 New Podcast! "How to Lie With Math" on @Spreaker
spreaker.com
How to Lie With Math
The title maybe a little misleading. This is about how we delude ourselves into adopting information as factual becuase it is presented using real math. Math is extremely important and valuable and a necessity for most sciences. However, like any other tool, math can give the illusion of knowledge while actually tricking us into believing things that are not correct. We primarily focus on averages and how problematic this concept can be, but extrapolate this into other forms of math that can be used to lie and mislead even the ones who are executing the computations.  Recommendations - Abraham: Cross Purposes: Christianity’s Broken Bargain With Democracy (Jonathan Rauch (https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300273540/cross-purposes/) - Shane: Chat Pile - Who Loves The Sun (https://open.spotify.com/album/2ITnf8HOokOJxjv483Dszk?si=3v175T9iRP2BY8aTU8XPqw) Holidays (9/23/2026): - Celebrate Bi-Sexuality Day - Dogs in Politics Day - International Day of Sign Languages - National Checkers Day - National Great American Pot Pie Day - National Snack Stick Day - Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day - See You at the Pole - Teal Talk Day - Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week - Constitution Week - Deaf Dog Awareness Week - International Clean Hands Week - International Deaf Awareness Week - International Interpreters and Translators Week - National Adult Day Services Week https://patreon.com/wwdwwpodcast Links and References:  - https://www.toddrose.com/endofaverage - https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/on-average/  - https://www.anecdote.com/2023/03/179-there-is-no-average/ - https://austraffic.com.au/aba/us-air-force-finds-averages-can-kill

Mini: Do We Need Privacy?
We have many mechanisms in place to protect our privacy. Some people care less about this and some people have taken this to tremendous extremes. Of course, many want unambiguous rules about privacy, but there is a lot of room for nuance. So, we ask the question about whether or not we need privacy and share some of the reasons people have given. The short answer is: until we can trust each other, we need privacy.  https://patreon.com/wwdwwdpodcast Links and References:  - https://www.scu.edu/ethics/focus-areas/internet-ethics/resources/why-we-care-about-privacy/ - https://www.privacyguides.org/en/basics/why-privacy-matters/ - https://www.teamim.com/insights/why-privacy-matters-even-if-you-have-nothing-to-hide

This is the final discussion in which we "break our silence" as the click-bait headlines like to call it, on our final thoughts about diagnoses and why we believe that they have caused more harm than good. How we understand, talk about, and think about life expectancy is sometimes misunderstood by some flukes of math. Diagnoses: More Harm Than Good? With Dr. Stu Law pt. 1
Diagnosing mental health has dramatically shaped how we think about and appraoch our thinking and treatment of mental health conditions. In some ways, this effect has had a profoundly helpful impact for many people. However, in many ways, this system has had a profoundly adverse impact. This episode kicks of a three-part series arguing that diagnoses for mental health have ultimately caused more harm than good. Mini: How Many Senses Do We Have?
How many senses do we have? Like so many things, it depends entirely on how you define "senses." If the question is how many distinct things can we sense? Then, we have a number of sense so large it doesn't make any sense (pun intended). But, we'll get into some of the senses that can be reasonably argued to exist to paint a picture of how many potentially overlooked "senses" we might have. https://www.patreon.com/wwdwwdpodcast Links and References:  - https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/02/260208233832.htm - https://www.sciencealert.com/humans-may-actually-have-over-30-senses-scientists-say - https://dornsife.usc.edu/news/stories/how-many-senses-do-we-have/ - https://www.sensorytrust.org.uk/blog/how-many-senses-do-we-have

There are an estimated 70 million deaf, hard of hearing, or hearing impaired people in world. Given that language globably developed through auditory communication using speech, deaf people in history were often mistreated. At least, in western and European countries. How to Kill Science
How to kill science is also how to kill humans. The incompetent "leadership" in the United States is racing toward dictatorship in their desire to kill all humans. They are proposing to rewrite science so that any government funding that pays for research gets to dictate what that research is and how it is interpreted. Either you say what the government wants, or else you don't get any research funding. It is an unprecedented move that no president has ever tried in history, becuase it is a terrible, horrible, stupid, counterproductive idea. But, that's what happens when you get a bunch of republicans in charge. We'll break down the details of this incredible stupidity and provide some guidance on what you can do about it. Antimetabole and Chiasmus
There is a form of rhetoric that is suprrisingly effective at persuading people to adopt beliefs regardless of their accuracy. These are called "antimetabole." In several interviews, Jane Goodall explained why she believed there was evidence of Bigfoot. While she was a wonderful natural scientist, a good science communicator, and radically changed the way we think about animals, she also had some biases that prevented a healthy skepticism from driving her perspective. There are pros and cons to the trajectory of genetic engineering research. Eventually, we will be confronted by a systemic drive to apply these interventions to human beings. On the one hand, genetic engineering could alleviate a tremendous amount of suffering for people with horrible genetic diseases. This ambiguously titled discussion is about the practice of stretching piercings to become large holes. We talk about the history of this practice, how it's done, and why it's done. This practice is commonly called "gauging," and although it looks painful, it is actually a slow process that uses the natural flexibility of skin to gradually increase the size of the piercing.
