Rapid Warming in the Himalaya Exacerbates Geohazard Cascades Beyond Adaptation Limits – World Weather Attribution

@bennethclarke.bsky.social said the "fingerprints of climate change are clear to see in these long-term changes." “While this is a complex event, our analysis brings together scientists with a diverse range of expertise to set out the factors that likely contributed to this catastrophe." (5/6)

The disaster was also preceded by unusually warm summer temperatures with the 3 days prior over 5C above average. Climate change has pushed July/Aug temperatures in the region up by about 1.5C to date, and 2C annually - surpassing the average global rate (about 1.4C to date). (4/6)

Geological factors are also likely to have played a role. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 is likely to have further preconditioned the slope for collapse, and potentially opened new cracks for meltwater ingress. (3/6)

A team of WWA scientists and glaciologists found that the collapse was a compound disaster with climate change worsening factors including glacial thinning, melting permafrost and meltwater ingress - with the freezing line (0C isotherm) rising by about 100m per decade (2/6)

Climate change is driving unprecedented European ocean temperatures, with severe impacts for marine life – World Weather Attribution

Prof. Friederike Otto said: “Our seas are heating at a rate that is outpacing global warming averages, with direct consequences for life on land as well as at sea. By delaying the inevitable shift away from fossil fuels, we’re pushing many ocean ecosystems closer to extinction.” (4/5)

WWA analysed four coastal regions and found that climate change - primarily from burning fossil fuels - has directly caused about 2°C of warming in the Mediterranean, 1.4°C of warming in the Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Peninsula, and 1.3°C in the Celtic region. (3/5)

Europe's marine heatwaves reached 6°C above normal this summer and the impacts are severe: declining species, ecosystems shifting, fisheries & aquaculture disrupted. Warmer seas also drive coastal humidity, increasing the risks of extreme heat on land. (2/5)

They found that the rain is common - expected at least every 2 years - and there was no clear role for climate change - though data limitations increases uncertainty. Rapid urbanisation, deforestation, insufficient flood mitigation and colonial-era land regulations worsened the disaster (2/4).

Devastating floods in Assam were worsened by human factors - but not necessarily climate change. WWA scientists analysed the recent monsoon downpours that resulted in floods that killed at least 99, displaced hundreds of thousands and inundated tens of thousands of hectares of cropland. (1/4)
