The Balloon Fiesta is a world-famous event. It began in 1972 w/ 13 balloons launched from a shopping center, growing into the largest hot-air balloon event on Earth, with 500+ balloons. At night, the Balloon Glow includes 100s of tethered balloons lit up like giant paper lanterns. Oct 3 - 11, 2026

Abó was a regional trading hub before the Spanish arrived. The community was decimated by drought, famine, diseases & raids. Surviving residents & priests abandoned the village in 1672. Located 9 miles west of Mountainair, Abó features a Tompiro pueblo and a 17th-century Spanish mission. #NewMexico

Constructed in 1899, The Lodge at Cloudcroft began as an alpine retreat for railroad & timber workers before opening to travelers seeking relief from the Texas heat. After a devastating fire leveled the original log structure in 1909, a grand new building opened on its current site in 1911. #travel

Albuquerque was a Spanish colonial outpost in 1706. The city is a blend of Native American and Spanish history and heritage. Named after a Spanish viceroy, the town grew on the banks of the Rio Grande as a vital stop on the old trade routes. Today, Old Town remains the historic heart of the city.

Madrid is a quirky community on the Turquoise Trail, between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Founded as a coal town, commercial mining began in the 1830s & 1850s, leading to the official founding of Madrid in 1869. By the late 1890s, it was a strict company town, supplying fuel for the Santa Fe Railway.

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge transforms into a migration sanctuary every autumn as tens of thousands of sandhill cranes, snow geese & Ross's geese arrive to overwinter on the Rio Grande. Mornings & evenings are the best time to go, as thousands of birds lift off (or arrive) in groups.

Surrounded by ponderosa pine forests, aspen groves, and rugged mountains, including Hermits Peak, Pendaries is a gateway to the adjacent Pecos Wilderness and the Santa Fe National Forest. Tucked away on a county road, it's a relaxing place to decompress for a few days. #nature #travel #NewMexico

The Lincoln County War lasted from 1878-1881. Two wealthy businessmen, Lawrence Murphy & James Dolan, ran a powerful business monopoly known as "The House," controlling local stores, banks, and government contracts until an Englishman, John Tunstall, opened a rival store & bank w/ Alexander McSween.

The Jemez is one of my favorite day trips. From Corrales, it doesn't take long to get there. The area is visually stunning. The landscape changes dramatically every 10-15 minutes and there are an impressive assortment of things to see and do, depending on interests and time available. 😊 #NewMexico

At 11,973 feet above sea level, Sierra Blanca is the tallest peak in the Sacramento Mountains, with spectacular views of the lower peaks and the Tularosa Basin. From the peak you can see where the black lava flows of Valley of Fire stops right before the dunes of White Sands begins. Stark contrast.

Cerrillos, Spanish for "the little hills," was known for mining before Europeans arrived. In fact, Cerrillos has the longest historically intact record of pick and shovel mining in the Southwest. Humans settled in this area as early as 500 A.D. Puebloans discovered gold, lead and turquoise deposits.

I am enjoying World Cup fans. Though Trump has avoided the games so far, he is supposed to present the trophy, which gives him an opportunity to make everything about himself, insult the world, and/or embarrass the nation. Hoping for the best, bracing for the worst. Orange nimrod. 😁

Seeing more snakes than normal this year. Mostly Gopher snakes and Coach Whips. I was in my car last night when one scooted by. We both froze. Eventually, it slithered under my car and watched me until I left.
