This photo was taken by Canadian mountaineer Dave Parfitt on top of Mt. Thor on August 7, 1966.

WSU alumni John Roskelley and Chris Kopczynski stand next to the stone cairn they built to prove they had made it to the top.

In 1965, one of the last unclimbed mountains in British Columbia was Mt. Thor. Located in the remote Gold Range of central British Columbia, it had rebuffed two previous Canadian attempts.

For the third expedition attempt, the Kootenai Mountaineers of Nelson, British Columbia, asked the president of the Spokane Mountaineers (Bill Boulton) if the Spokane Mountaineers had “two strong rock climbers” who would join them on this pioneering expedition.

Boulton choose Roskelley and Kopczynski to represent the club.

They were just teenagers at the time. Roskelley was 17, and Kopczynski was 18. They made the trip to Canada and made the climb to the top.

"For me, this climb cemented my passion for mountain exploration," Kopczynski says.

As #WSU President Betsy Cantwell notes in her letter this issue, literacy is "the ability to evaluate information critically, manage your time and resources, communicate clearly, and take initiative without waiting for direction.” magazine.wsu.edu/2026/01/30/l... #GoCougs #FirstWords
As WSU President Betsy Cantwell notes in her letter this issue, a primary value of a WSU, or any college, education is a “literacy of learning” so students can navigate change and evolving knowledge beyond graduation.

“It’s the ability to evaluate information critically, manage your time and resources, communicate clearly, and take initiative without waiting for direction,” she writes.

The president’s insights hold true even for those of us who graduated many years ago. WSU taught me and generations of Cougs how to read well, write clearly, understand science and philosophy, and build skills to use throughout our lives.

The learning doesn’t just end. It’s crucial that we continue to sharpen our many literacy skills to grasp an ever more complex world.
