Unfortunately it didn’t run long and didn’t get an anime, which is a shame. The artwork is energetic, the characters likable, and the tempo brisk. It would have been fun to see this air alongside the Sailor Senshi at some point in the 90s!

In a huge leap from Shinohara-sensei’s “Umi no Yami, Tsuki no Kage” this one is a super silly but expressive action/comedy with a bit of romance sprinkled in. Considering the time period, it might have been Shogakukan’s answer to Sailor Moon, lol.

It was serialized from 1993 to 1994 In Shojo Comic (Now Sho-comi) over 8 volumes/36 chapters. There was no anime, but a Drama CD came out in 1995.

Part two of reading older (80’s-90’s) Shogakukan Shojo (Maybe this‘ll become a series of threads?) This time we’ll highlight Yukako Iisaka’s “Battle Girl Ai.” 16 year old Ai Kagami is killed in a car crash but is rebuilt as a heroine to do battle (heh) against the evil organization “Black Lizard.”

With Ruka's ability to infect and possess others, the plot goes places fast. I dig the trippy visuals and how unhinged Ruka gets. I'm around volume three now, but I'm enjoying it. If only Red River's license had opened the door for this one to get picked up...

Twin sisters Ruka and Rumi are into the same guy. He seemingly chooses Ruka, but before she can reciprocate, a virus infects the two, giving them psychic powers. Rumi takes this chance to violently keep everyone away from her love interest, including her sister.

Been reading 80s-90s Shogakukan Shojo lately and ran across "Umi no Yami, Tsuki no Kage" by the "Red River" artist Chie Shinohara. The series ran for 18 volumes in Shogakukan's Sho-comi magazine from 1987 to 1991 and had a 3-episode OVA.
