These quirks feel like artefacts of an earlier, more excitable synth market, when mini-synths weren't trying so hard to be so serious all the time. With fun-size music technology, we're always whipping ourselves up into this debate about whether something's a real musical instrument or "just a toy". In a failure to realise that this is a false dichotomy (how about both?), a lot of newer gear following in the Volca's footsteps feels almost insecure in the face of this distinction, tripping over itself to be ever-more clinical, ever more "pro". It's refreshing nowadays, then, to use a synth with such a charming roughness about it. It's unashamedly toyish; joyfully imperfect - and what that means is that it's brimming with that ever-elusive quality among synthesisers: personality.

And I don't say that just because of its sometimes strangely-conceived feature set: let it be known that the Volca Keys has a sound, and a unique one at that. It sounds almost brash, slightly metallic; maybe brassy, with this fuzzy, appealing warmth buzzing all around every patch. A pretty comprehensive array of controls allows for substantial shaping of this sound - in particular, the 700S filter is equally happy taming the oscillators as it is sharpening them to a screaming point - but ultimately the basic sound of the Volca Keys is an inviting and lovably rustic foundation for further sound design.
