This perspective in particular: bsky.app/profile/doct... - "the media company/AI company lawsuits are a fight to see who gets the biggest piece when creative workers get eaten for dinner. We don't want either side to win: we want to be taken off the menu altogether."

Another excellent thread from @doctorow.pluralistic.net on IP, copyright, and AI. I haven't always agreed with his take on copyright vs. AI, but I think this argument makes sense.

Fiery and well-deserved criticism re: Australia's proposal that artists can "opt out" of having their works used for AI training.
Days after AI companies told us their product might destroy all humanity, we discover that – in the manner of standover goons doing a shakedown – they have now threatened our government that unless it sacrifices our nation’s culture for what they call “training” (translation: theft), they will not invest here. The government’s leaked proposals add up to this: making Australia to AI regulation what the Cayman Islands is to tax evasion.

No artist I know is happy to see destroyed a system that has developed over centuries to enable them to work. Copyright law is not a block or a problem – it is the foundation of all the creative industries. It’s what makes AC/DC and Anna Funder, Tim Winton and Cate Blanchett possible. Protecting creators’ rights means protecting copyright, the foundation of Australian literature, music, art and film.

The proposed idea of an artist choosing to “opt out” – choosing not to have their work used for AI “training” (translation: theft) – is as hopeless as waving to a swimmer being attacked by a white pointer after you made it to shore. Would we accept the idea that because the Gypsy Jokers insisted on making home invasions legal a few of us may be allowed to “opt out” of home invasions?

Important, if depressing, read from @josephpolitano.bsky.social on the apparent impacts of generative AI on creative fields in recent years. One bright spot stands out, though: the 70% surge in book sales over the past six years.

Good advice - don't use AI for reviews. Why? Fassnacht sums up why: 1. Uploading unpublished work to LLMs = copyright problems 2. Others will know you used AI 3. If editors wanted an AI review, they could do it themselves 4. AI reviews require further reviewing 5. Reviewing = learning

Kudos to @ketanjoshi.co for a great take on how careful, deliberative writing and editing are a much-needed antidote to what he calls the "Anslopocene": lnkd.in/p/eYwCgTrx

Spot-on advice from @emilymbender.bsky.social: 1. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. 2. Alarmibragging claims from companies should be scrutinized 3. Any press releases & news articles examined for anthropomorphizing language

Part of this study's conclusion: "To support responsible AI use, students should also be encouraged to complete their initial drafts independently before using ChatGPT for feedback or revision."

Great comments: "For many of the students I tutored, the writing center was the one thing standing between them and using AI to write their essays. This is a deeply disturbing choice by the Harvard administration that in my opinion signals the beginning of systemic gutting of the humanities."
