Things will be quiet here for a bit. Bad mental times and struggling to have any desire to write, definitely getting down on myself and my progress. Will see if a break helps but I'm sure I'll be back around eventually 💜

New chapter today! Very excited to share it~ Dueling has always been a fact of life for Callista. But this first one since Alexandra's return feels...different. 🌺⚔️ www.scribblehub.com/read/2293846... #ashesofcorvus #writingcommunity #writing
It took minutes of convincing for Callista to place padding along her sword arm, the smallest bit of safety for the imminent duel. Ever since she had made her declaration, she had taken her place on the dueling grounds, sternly waiting with her feet planted in the dirt. Motionless, unwavering. Callista had a look in her eyes, cold and calculated, more Beast than woman. Someone that spotted a prey animal that it knew ten different ways to kill, and now had the luxury of deciding how.

Alexandra comforts Calli after the day's fighting. (There were so, so many options to choose from today- unsurprisingly. Thought it would be cute to pick one where Alexandra is guarding Callista instead.) #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
Alexandra’s nails dug in slightly, trying to coax Callista’s hair back into its shape. Even though she knew that Callista would be able to deal with some scratching on her scalp, she couldn't help but be tentative with every gesture. If she hurt her, or drew out another pained gasp, she wouldn't forgive herself.
When she moved her hand to brush away the loose hairs and grime from her fingers, Callista's head followed. She nudged her cheek against her palm, closing her eyes and letting out a low groan. Her lips were barely parted, breathing settling.
Is she- enjoying having her head pet?
For once, the thought of teasing Callista didn't come to mind. It was a secret she had every intention of guarding, one she wanted to keep as her own to comfort her protector with. Not to let anyone know or use, to not let them feel the sensation of her head pressing against their palm.
Hers, alone.

Finished editing the next chapter! I've been posting a lot of snippets for it the last few weeks but it'll be really exciting to finally have the dueling scene out there and done with (and to continue writing the aftermath!)

A Hat in Time! Alexandra convinces Callista to join Dead Bird Studio with her, not realizing they're both now starring in a romance film. They both are treated well, as they're pretty used to talking birds with strange powers in their own world anyway...

Some more duel snippets~ #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
If Yvette was going to draw out the time, Alexandra would make use of it too and prepare Callista. She stood before her protector, having to stand on the tips of her toes to adjust the collar of her shirt and its mismatching sides. The rest of the rough fabric still held the signs of the morning exertion, but she paid it no mind as her fingertips glided along the creases. It was all that stood between cold steel and the mortal woman beneath.
"You will not be convinced even to let me retrieve your gambeson?" Though it was phrased as a question, Alexandra's voice did not lift at the final word.
Callista shook her head, refusing still to give a reason why. It wasn't a death wish. At least, not for herself.
Alexandra glanced down at Callista's sword, secured tightly on the right side of her hip. It, at least, was the same as she remembered, even in a world that had turned ceaselessly in her absence. The worn gold guard, showing signs of age no matter how well she maintained it. A grip the same mahogany as her country's flag. Silver-steel, stretching past the length of a rapier's reach.

Alexandra still has kept all of her humor and sarcasm despite four years of hiding as a member of a brutal mercenary group and losing one of her eyes. Despite it all she's still a sweetheart and still deeply in love with Calli 😇

Alexandra marvels at what it takes to rise up the ranks in the palace. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
"So," Alexandra breathed out, returning back to their conversation from before. "How long did you have to do all of that before you became Vice Captain?"
"Two years until they granted me the rank. Though said so plainly, it feels like no time at all."
"No." The princess spoke curtly. "Two years can be an eternity."
Each of the tasks that Callista had listed would have been another woman's entire responsibilities. Training, protecting Erin, keeping in prime condition to duel- all while her usual duties were still expected of her?
Is Callista truly human? How could someone made of the same things as me do all of this?

Alexandra reminds Callista how dependent she used to be on her for her safety. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
"How long did I stay in my room during those poisoning attempts, Callista?"
"Many, many months."
"And every day, you hid yourself and slipped out to the market to bring me food. Because it was the only way for you to know it would be safe to eat."
Callista delayed her response, mouth left open. Her brows furrowed, scanning Alexandra's face to see how much she knew.
"Alexandra. Who told you that?" That had never been a detail she had shared, especially not in the moment. Alexandra hadn't needed another thing to fret over.
"It's not important." Her shoulders swayed, shaking her head with her entire body. "My point is- I relied so much upon you to keep my life safe. And Calli, you were falling asleep on your feet. The bags under your eyes were so bad you refused to take your helmet off, even in the burning summers. You tried to hide it but- I never forgot."

“Watched” instead of “observe”. Callista’s challenger brings a weapon more suited for killing Beasts to their duel… #WritingCommunity #Writing #WriteSky
Alexandra turned to mask her embarrassment for nearly causing a scene, catching the approach of Yvette's page. Clutched in her hands was a flamberge, a greatsword that stood taller than the princess herself, dark-gray steel that matched the skies. Its blade snaked back and forth, each curve making it all the more unwieldy. No knight that she had ever met used something so massive and vicious in this era.
Even Alexandra, fledgling student under Callista that she was, knew it was no weapon for dueling. But it traded hands over to Yvette, who set herself to inspecting its aged metal.
She watched Callista's eyes narrow, then relax. The only explanation she would give was muttered under her breath:
"So, that is your intention. So be it."

Anti-talents! Alexandra: Definitely lying. She has been caught in her lies repeatedly even by the most gullible people in the story. Callista: Small talk. Anything where she has to talk about herself and her interests (because her life is pretty much just her work), she freezes up.

Happy #FaveLineFriday! It's been a very planning-heavy week for me, blocking out future chapters. But I've been working on editing this morning so I have another duel-snippet to share:
"I refuse to surrender to her." She spat as she spoke, watching it stain Callista's face. Even as stoic as she usually was, the royal protector flinched, wiping it away with the back of her hand. Slowly, menacing, Callista leaned forward and whispered something only for Yvette's ears:

"Then Yvette, surrender yourself to death."

Alexandra and Callista reunite with Calli's mom (and her very, very messy office). #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
Alexandra could only giggle at the usual patter, taking the time to look at the rounded office.
As the Knight Marshall to the old region of Norios, Liora Ashmont was afforded a place more spacious than most. What she did with the extra room, however, was indicative of the woman Alexandra remembered. It was a mess of letters and papers on her desk and pressed into bookshelves, with no hint of organization. Some were wedged under a mug to be used as a coaster, forming rings on the regal handwriting. A twisting staircase ascended up into two protruding balconies, though the dusty tomes stored above were all but forgotten.
The map at the center was where all the care had been doled out to. Pressed into the back wall, ornamented with flags in the form of bent iron and fabric scraps, it immediately drew in a visitor’s eye. Different colors of banners dotted this superimposed version of the swampy, southern region all around Revangarde. It was a war map for a nation supposedly at peace.

Alexandra would love dressing up for Halloween. Putting together all the pieces herself, and also getting to hide behind a costume and not be seen as a princess. Callista would prefer some outdoor time. Getting to pick out and carve a pumpkin, along with some stargazing~

The final act of Alexandra and Callista's visit to the hot springs. Callista with her golden retriever energy not knowing how else to handle the situation... #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
Before she could sink silently into her despair, she was hugged.
No- that wasn’t accurate. Tackled. Tumbled into the springs by the weight of her protector.
As Alexandra descended into the warm waters together, surrounded by bubbles and her friend, she couldn’t help but smile. It was so stupid. You awkward, idiot of a woman, thinking it was appropriate to do that. Thinking it would help her, moments after recounting the worst moment of her life.
And yet.
The side of her head settled against Callista’s chest and she closed her eye, feeling the both of them float to the surface, together.

Legitimately out of all my characters, Callista might be the only one that I would actually feel safe hearing that from. Alexandra 100% will get caught during her plan. Morgan will try to flirt their way out and make things worse. Simone will forget her idea about 10 seconds later... 😭

Alexandra is far more brain than brawn, even when it comes to fighting. Talking her way out of (and into) trouble, and generally being tricky. Callista is more brawn, but it's not as wide of a gap as Alexandra. An intelligent duelist, but she works *very hard* on maintaining her physique.

“Collapse” instead of meltdown- and vibes as well, honestly. Suitors are on the way for Alexandra, and she’s struggling with processing it… #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
Callista stared, catching the glassy texture of Alexandra's eye, even as she refused to lift up her head to stare back. Against her armor, she felt the tiniest tremble, fingers uncertain.
"Do you want to talk about what the Queens said, or-"
"Not tonight." Alexandra whimpered, holding on tight.
If Callista asked more and pushed on the wrong place and found it to be bruised, she feared Alexandra may very well collapse on the spot. The expression was indistinguishable from the one she had given during the fire when Callista had saved her, delicate and vulnerable to anything and everything. The Alexandra that existed beneath her own armor.

It's *almost* exclusively Callista and Alexandra, and they trade it back and forth depending on the scene. If they're together, it's whichever of them is dealing with the most conflict (Callista during the duel, Alexandra while she has her scars examined, for example).

The duel looms near, as the rain only grows more dense. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
Yvette thumped the side of her head with her palm, taking her place opposite Callista. She was the first to raise her blade to the sky, pointing it towards the home of the Celestus to implore for their blessing, for the Plume Mothers to play the final witness. It took a great deal of effort to lift the greatsword, relishing in the awed gasps as she kept it held firm.
The Scar, hidden behind the clouds, was blind to today's perils.
Her opponent was in no rush to join her. Rain pattered around Callista, solid impacts that formed puddles at her feet. She tested the ground, seeing how far her boots would sink into the loosened mud. In time, her fingers traced along her belt, finding her sword’s hilt and feeling the surge of warmth as it responded to its keeper.
In a smooth, exacting way, form kept precise, Callista drew her weapon. Its narrow blade was aimed upwards, water forming streams all the way down to its guard.

First meeting with Alexandra: "Wow the princess is very sociable and so easy to talk to!" Second meeting: "She's still fun to talk to but- kind of a brat/gremlin, isn't she?" She has enough social grace to mask for a good first impression. After that it's *all downhill* 😭

After all the attempts on Alexandra’s life, even something small gets Callista worried :c #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
A series of coughs rang out, crumbs appearing in Alexandra's palm as she covered her mouth. Panic jolted, drawing Callista near, but the princess waved her off before she could agonize over what was going wrong.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. It's not that." She refused to speak the word 'poison' into existence, even as her voice came out as a breathy wheeze. "Just ate too much."
The two strayed off the path, finding the cramped space between two homes and giving Alexandra a chance to collect herself. Callista stayed lowered, one knee digging into the dirt, bracing Alexandra's arm and looking for any signal that something was about to go wrong. Callista's fretting didn't end until she could see that her skin stayed the same, peachy color, and that her breathing had settled into its usual rhythm.

Deirdre gets some more work on her tattoo from- a priestess? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #Writing
It was, in fairness, a strange sight.
The Harbormastere lounged on a wooden table, all her usual layers folded neatly in the chairs beside her. Under the chapel's candlelight, lying on her stomach, the half-finished masterpiece of her back was on full display. Black ink and tan skin intermixed to form twisting shapes, agonizingly intricate with thin lines trailing down her shoulders. The greatest pride was the outline of a bird's wings, swallowing up all the space they could from her neck down. It was unfinished, left to the one woman she trusted for the task.
The Nestling priestess loomed nearby, tapping against the glass tube at one end of her needle to make sure the ink had the proper consistency. She barely gave heed to the nudity before her, a stark difference from the sailors that prowled the Grand Anchorage.
"I would ask for you to tell me if the pain is ever too much," The priestess mumbled, examining the needle's point. "But you were blessed by the Celestus with a stubborn, stubborn mind. I'll save my breath."
