Authors-where do you draw the line between fact and fiction when you are fictionalizing a historical event? Do you change things while still keeping real people and some of the facts the same? I'm writing a real event from 26 years ago and it's now half true, half fiction. Will readers reject this?

Beware of New Beta Reader Scam on Bluesky
While Bluesky so far has been a fairly scam-proof social media platform – thanks to its ability to create sharable moderation lists that block bad guys – that strength is being tested. Book marketi…

If your characters aren't waking you up at night or distracting you in the middle of your IRL convos, then you're either writing the wrong novel or you're on your eleventh draft.

Outlining your novel is great because it makes the huge project of writing a book seem manageable, but I don't ever strictly adhere to mine. There's always a point where one of my characters tells me, "I just wouldn't do that." And I know they're right.

Plot is what happens. Story is what those events slowly teach the narrator to admit. Once I realized that, my first drafts started reading more like second drafts. #WritingCommunity #AmWritingFiction

One thing I wish I had known before I started querying (3 books, two agents, multiple years), is how much I would grow as a person, author, and artist. I learned so much about community, publishing, writing, and cheerleading--for myself and others. #WritingCommunity

I think readers can tell the difference between a writer who wants to be admired and a writer who wants to understand something. The second kind of book lingers longer.

The most interesting characters aren't contradictory. They're consistent in ways that only become obvious after you've watched them making many decisions. By the time you realize their central weakness, you know whether they can overcome it. #AmWritingFiction #WritingCommunity

My beta readers aren't authors. They're avid readers who see my manuscript as a free book, and they can't wait to dive in. The advice they give me is entirely different from my Cps, who are authors. #WritingCommunity

One joy of a new WIP is discovering the voice. I don't start writing until I have a solid idea who the protagonist is, and then everything that I distill into the voice comes from the way that character sees the world. It's so intimate. #amwritingfiction #writingcommunity

Revision isn't primarily about making a novel cleaner. It's making it more inevitable. Your readers should feel like every twist is believable and satisfying. #AmWritingFiction #WritingCommunity

I feel ripped off that the 250th landed on such a bad year, when everyone is so divided. When I was a kid, I imagined cities would throw extra special parties, close down the streets and open up the fire hydrants, neighbors would dance and hug and sing Born in the USA.

So much of my art deals with reinvention. The internet has made us endlessly re-brandable. Every social media account you have has a different flavor. Which social is closest to your truest self? Which one is your favorite version of yourself?

Every novel starts out feeling impossible for a different reason. The trick isn't finding an easier book. It's finding the impossibility you're willing to puzzle through and perfect. #writingcommunity #amwritingfiction #wip

My biggest downfall as a novelist was pacing. Then I read Matt Bird's THE SECRETS OF STORY. It's a craft book for screenwriters, which is just what I needed as movies have to do so much in so little time and all interiority must be shown through dialog and action. #writingcommunity #fictiontips

Grateful to the industry pros who take time to give thoughtful feedback and encouragement. In a career where rejection is the norm, it's nice when someone thinks your story is worthy of all the trials and tribulations it puts you through on its way from Word doc to hardcover.
