this is my cat son django. most people think he’s named after the lead in django unchained because he came into my life around the time that movie came out, but he’s actually named after franco nero’s character in the original sergio corbucci film django (1966), which inspired unchained.

pictured: my cat son django curled up at the foot of my bed this morning. he is a big potat man and i adore him. his fur is also looking particularly scruffy.

franco nero in django (1966). my kitty had a haunted look in his eyes when we first took him in, and it reminded me of nero’s piercing blue eyes and haunted expression in the corbucci picture.

I read a story of his long ago that sits like poison in my mind and I can't get rid of it. And some books which were just plain unpleasant, like eating food with such a bad taste that you can't get rid of the memory. He is really the only writer I've come across, on reading thousands and thousands of books all my life, where I wish he had not written at all.

A comment here made me realize why I don't like him - it feels similar to violence porn, snuff movies, that kind of thing - milking human ugliness for maximum effect.

In my career defending academic freedom and free speech, I never saw anything become as immediately radioactive as views that ran counter to the narrative on trans issues. Papers were retracted, compelled speech was treated as normal, and people were canceled for saying things that would have sounded like common sense just a few years earlier. It seemed to become a kind of secular blasphemy overnight. And usually, that is a sign that the true believers know, at some level, that they are on shaky ground.

Ranga Rax, aka Handler Mu (though she rarely uses that outside of work hours, is not a normal handler.
Well, "normal" is the wrong word. No handler is _normal. Every last one is a special kind of freak. Which is to say, a superior entity who stands above the dogs which infest this disgusting world.
And also a fucking freak.
Ranga's no exception to that rule. But she reckons she's unique, or at least she's never heard of any other handler like herselt.
The rest of them have some sort of rationale for their actions. Some handlers are loyal Imperial soldiers who believe utterly in their mission.
Others have more personal motives. They'll readily admit they're monsters, but they don't _really_ believe it. Monsters for the greater good, heh. Whatever tastes better going down.
Ranga is different. She's under no illusions about her work contributing to some greater whole or improving the world or anything like that. Hell, the day the Empire finally crushes the rebellion and the world starts to heal will be the saddest day of her life.

Ranga Rax became a handler because handlers get paid handsomely to control and torture girls.
Which, frankly, she would do for free. She _did_ do it for free for a while, because hurting girls gets her off. But it was illegal for her when she was a civilian. Now it's her job.
They say that if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life. Ranga's hard pressed to argue. Every day is a wonderful new adventure in sadism.
