Dear Discord,

I understand that you want to look like you're doing your part to keep kids safe online, I really do. I commend the effort. I'm 25 now, and I remember being a teenager with access to things I shouldn't have, once.

But this new announced policy of requiring facial scanning or government ID submission is repulsive. I've been a mostly-happy user for years, I've made some life-changing friendships on this platform. I've been a paying Nitro subscriber for as long as I've been able to afford to do so. But I will not submit my face to be scanned or my ID to be uploaded in order to continue using Discord as I have for years.

You've already suffered data breaches to the tune of millions of users' IDs as relates to the teen-as-default policies implemented in the UK and Australia by law. Why on Earth would I trust you to have the safety infrastructure in place to prevent my ID from being blasted out into the world for all to see?

I can't trust that, and I won't trust it. The next month is going to be a time of research for my friends and loved ones as we figure out somewhere else to go that respects our privacy, and I'm encouraging everyone I know to do the same.

We will only reverse course if you reverse first.
