I need to share some further thoughts on last week's #BBCimmigration story. My segment was recorded weeks ago not knowing whether it would ever air. I was given less than 24 hours' notice of release, while I was away on leave.

When the story broke, my initial posts were centered on the #fraudsters exploiting vulnerable #migrants. I was really taken aback by the editing but felt I had to consider everything released by the BBC before commenting further. I am very annoyed to see a lot of my expert commentary selectively reported, taken out of context or ignored. Here are some examples.

➡️ I agreed to work on this project to shine a light over vulnerable migrants being abused by scammers. The BBC's editing of this piece suggests that migrants exploit the immigration and asylum system. This is NOT my experience after 30 years in the field.
➡️ I never said it was easy to fake #LGBTI #asylumclaims. This was erroneously paraphrased by the BBC.
➡️ When I was shown Tanisha's footage I commented not only on wrongdoing but also on the unviability of what she was selling, including the possibility of the client's wife making a subsequent, successful asylum application as a lesbian.
➡️ It is not inconceivable a fraudulent asylum application - of any type - can slip through the net and succeed. That said I do not have any knowledge of anyone being granted asylum on bogus facts. The BBC's investigation found no evidence of this either.
➡️ My experience of fraudulent claims emanates from assisting victims of #immigrationscams when they do not work, which in my experience is the reality. In many cases my clients had viable asylum claims on different facts but were duped by scammers promising results, fleecing them for whatever little money they had. It took years to turn these cases around.
➡️ The main reason immigration scams exist is due to the systematic decimation of the provision #legalaid services over the last 25 years. I mentioned this fact in the two radio interviews I did on Wednesday morning. See link to excellent article on legal aid in the comments.
➡️ LGBTI asylum claimants face very specific inherent vulnerabilities.
➡️ LGBTI asylum claims account for a tiny proportion of overall applications. In my opinion the numbers do not support Ejel Khan's claims of "widespread abuse". Mr Khan provided no data to this effect. LGBTI asylum charities should have been consulted for balance and were not.
➡️ When I was shown Ely's footage, I explained why the #domesticviolence application he was trying to sell would not work. The BBC ignored this, choosing to show the testimony of a criminal solicitor - without any discernible experience in Immigration - claiming the Immigration Rules are "too lax" and ripe for abuse. He provided no evidence for his assertion.

All the above has been put to the BBC, communicating my displeasure at the final edit. Quite simply this is not what I had signed up for and cannot see myself working with the BBC ever again.

'Labour's housing secretary Steve Reed: "If you abolish landlords, where are you going to get the homes from?"

"Somebody offering you a product you want to pay for, at a price you're happy with, is a good thing"'

"Even the Tories' political education department had no real objection to the further reduction of the tiny private rented sector that existed in the 1970s. It wrote: "The accelerating decline of the privately rented sector is quite irreversible. The private landlord, as he exists now and has existed, will, within a generation, be almost as extinct as the dinosaur. There is nothing that can be done about this." Conservatives in the 1970s merely sought to retain a handful of petty landlords, who ought to be entitled to a "fair return" if they let out a spare room or two, but they recognised that private renting tends to be an expensive, poor-quality and economically wasteful way of accommodating the population. The near-death of landlordism was one of the good news stories of the last century."

"Though Mr. Smith criticized President Donald Trump's trade policy, the two found much else to agree on. The Times reported that, thanks to the corporate tax cuts Mr. Trump signed into law, which FedEx had lobbied for, the company's tax bill plunged to zero, from $1.5 billion. Mr. Smith had said that businesses like FedEx would respond to the windfall with major new investments, yet FedEx reduced its capital expenditures and increased its spending on stock buybacks."

ON 27 APRIL 1806

MOEHANGA DISCOVERED BRITAIN

Imgflip.com

Happy Moehanga Day

The 27th of April is Moehanga Day in the United Kingdom

On 27 April 1806 Great Britain was discovered by Moehanga Ngāpuhi.

Of course, various indigenous, white-skinned tribes already inhabited the British Isles for thousands of years, but Moehanga was the first Māori to discover Britain. The British natives were in awe of Moehanga's tattoos and they insisted he meet their chieftain King George III.

When Moehanga arrived on the island he saw families living in primitive, damp and unsanitary conditions and a brutal society that punished almost any act of disobedience-from theft to living with Gypsies-with death. The Britons were a warlike people, renowned and feared for their prowess at fighting other European tribes and even raiding and conquering lands and taking slaves on distant continents.

Today Britain is a thriving multi-cultural nation, producing a range of quality exports whilst preserving its rich heritage and traditions.
