À propos! A continuous discussion between me and a friend, former lodge operator north of 60, about solar tech. Now, at a mere 54°40’, I have no excuse.

For my ears one of striking tells of Scots. Re Perth, Scotland, if I say Pairth instead of Purth, my wife and the couple we travelled with will start reminiscing.

11 years ago I was walking near Oberweier, Germany, and my German cousin pointed at mounds in the field and asked do you know these Maulwurf? It comes from the Middle High German moltwerf (earth/soil + to throw). Over time, the root molt (dirt) was corrupted into Maul (mouth).

It’s not confined to whale men. I had a friend whose brother had a diet so deficient he developed classic symptoms- bleeding gums & loose teeth.

Three unrelated Proto‑Germanic roots 1. *wītaną — “to know” 2. *wītą — “punishment” 3. *wīþ‑ — preverb meaning “against, away,” used in motion/separation verbs You have a false composite entry with senses for “know,” “go,” and “punish,” but the comparative evidence keeps them strictly separate.

4/4 Updated atmospheric chemistry models (Caltech/JPL) show significant perturbations in HOx and COx species under UV exposure, consistent with ongoing oxidant production. These models reinforce that UV‑driven oxidant formation is an active process on modern Mars. See pure.psu.edu/en/publicati...

3/4 A 2025 Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Science study demonstrates that natural semiconducting minerals (e.g., pyrite) undergo photo‑oxidation under Mars‑like UV flux, producing iron oxides within 72 hours. See www.frontiersin.org/journals/ast...

2/4 Additional photolysis experiments published in Nature Geoscience (2024) confirm that solar UV photolysis of CO₂ is a major atmospheric pathway for generating reactive carbon‑oxygen species on early Mars. See www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Synthesis of 13C-depleted organic matter from CO in a reducing early Martian atmosphere - Nature Geoscience
Isotopically depleted organic matter reported in ancient sediments on Mars could have been synthesized from CO produced due to photolysis of CO2 in the early Martian atmosphere.

1/4 A 2018 Brigham Young University study explicitly tested UV irradiation of CO₂ and water vapor in a Mars‑like atmosphere, demonstrating that UV light can drive the formation of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). See physics.byu.edu/docs/thesis/...

Matrix theory James Joseph Sylvester introduced the term matrix in 1850, using the Latin sense of “womb” or “source” to describe an array that gives birth to determinants.

Ayup, That’s Some Good
When he lived in Nova Scotia, Jeffrey from Montreal, Canada, noted that the word some was often used as an intensifier, as in That’s some good or She’s some pretty or She’s right some pretty.
