His hair covers his eyes, and there's an implication that he may have taken a blow meant for Anduin.

Anduin kneels behind him, cradling his back, with an angry expression. In his right hand, he holds aloft Shalamayne, channeling shadows to it - where the Light once shone in the blade. Through the converging darkness, Xal'atath's eyes gleam from the dark.
