Age usually changes what matters. Pauline Hanson has spent 30 years rewarded for grievance
Emotional priorities often change as people grow older. Pauline Hanson’s latest remarks raise a more troubling question about what happens when grievance is repeatedly rewarded instead.

Fifty-one years ago I (a stitched-up teenager) read The Dice Man by Luke Reinhart. It changed the way I feel about big changes in my life. Over the decades, I’ve been tempted to re-read it, but I fear I’ll hate it.

In Switzerland every driver has to complete first aid training prior to getting a learner’s permit, and then update it every six years. I wonder what effect this has on the quality of the training. 🤔

Fortunately, no-one believed the claims. It was always patently clear from the text that it was a malicious attack. Most universities now put their staff directories behind a login, so today this kind of attack would be a little more difficult.

This story gives me the shudders. Our former neighbour stalked me online for years. Somehow he would find out each time I changed jobs, and he'd email my employer plus any colleagues he could identify, claiming I was a pedophile. It was always a burner email address, so there was no recourse.

I totally fail to understand the issue here. This rule was introduced in part to prevent tax fraud by dual citizens claiming to be non-resident, when in fact they had been here all the time, having re-entered Australia on the foreign passport. I’m shocked that other countries still allow this.

New Year’s Eve.
New Year's Eve
Omar Sakr

Typically, this is when we wish we were
wise, yet like fools, make plans as certain
and resolute as ants. There is a lesson for us
in how the end is followed fast by the start
of the new: perhaps you should not be
so afraid of death which, like time and rules,
we invented. I was here
before the Big Bang, you know. Trust men
to make the universe's birth an explosion.
I have other names for it, most of them untranslatable: think somewhere
between Always, and Blink, and you
approach the meaning if not the words.
Surely, anything but a bomb is true.
Surely, if this is a real celebration
and not another manic ritual of brutal distraction, we would create a reprieve from burning?
Surely the sky is desperate for silence,
or else the hard and beautiful work of birds?
Once, we could see the stars unaided,
the perfect light of memory, and now
we have only this snap, crackle, pop.
You will not believe me, child, but once
we could see the stars, and it was glorious.
