On the other hand, I get to look at my whole collection again while I sort them into lighter boxes. I’d forgotten how many pretty little screwed up games I own.

After we watched all seven seasons of Voyager, I tried to sell my wife on Enterprise, and she barely made it past the theme song. Every once in a while I will send her things like this. If I get stabbed to death in my sleep, I deserved it.

Today’s forecast: Spicy, with a chance of violence.

New edition of 13th Age just dropped, which is my favorite iteration OGL d20 fantasy. As with everything that Pelgrane Press publishes, it is incredibly gorgeous. I’m very excited to read it and put it away on my shame shelf without ever playing it… 😞
13th Age 2nd Edition box set, with special Icon dieSide view of the box set, featuring the spines of the Gamemaster’s Guide and Heroes’ Handbook. 13th Age 2e GM’s screen, view of Icons illustrations and charts. GM’s Handbook open to the page on Storm Giants, and the Heroes’ Handbook open to an illustration of a Tiefling Sorcerer.

Doctors I trust more than RFK Jr.
Still frame from the film Dr. Cyclops (1940).

Post a picture YOU took. Just a pic. No description (except for alt text, come on).
An orange cat, Woodstock, lounges on a crocheted blanket, one paw outstretched in the foreground. To his right, his human and best pal rests its head on Stockie’s back. The cat’s eyes are narrowed in a tired-of-your-shit-human expression. The human is chuffed, practically elated to be in the photo with its animal companion.

This NPC from the Borealis Wood playset caught my attention from the start. The last two lines of her description—just… damn. The PCs in this setting are hares. And if she’s not hungry enough to eat you, she’s an ancient mamma bear who will give you her hard-earned wisdom. I love it.
NÔSEMASKWA, Grizzly Bear
Trait: Devastation
Voice: As condescending as possible

Her name is Mother Bear in Cree. She’s seen nine litters come and go, and outlived many of her children. She is scarred from old wounds. She eats
tremendously of berries, eggs, fish, carrion, and roots. Hares, with their fast feet and short lives, barely concern her, unless there is nothing else around to eat. She, with her endless appetite and
incomprehensible size, concerns hares greatly.

Moves:
-Eat everything but bark
ƒ
ƒ-Destroy what threatens her and hers
ƒ
ƒ-Sleep away the winter and rise hungry
ƒ
ƒ-Range tirelessly across all terrain
ƒ
-Impart ancient wisdom

Excerpt from the Night Witches play materials. It reads:

“Have all the players stand, and stand yourself. Administer the following oath:

“I, [NAME], promise to rise to the defense of my Motherland, the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics, as a fighting man [sic] of the Worker’s
and Peasant’s Red Army, I promise to defend it bravely, skillfully, with
dignity and honor, sparing neither my blood nor my life itself for the
achievement of total victory over our enemies.”

Not at all size-related unless you consider that crushing whole peeled tomatoes in your fist is oddly cathartic. But anyway. It’s Sunday sauce time!

At the end of every session, you ask the players where they’ll be performing next. One time, my group told me Kanye West’s birthday party at the Cloud Gate in Chicago, and added that Anish Kapoor would be there. All silliness aside, the writing in this game is excellent. This passage floored me:
Love

For fairies:

A few playbook plays say that you charm someone or, maybe, that someone falls in love with you. Take this to be the fleeting love of fairy glamourie, intense but not profound.

True love must be given freely. It must be held loosely, and it can be
revoked as freely as it was given.

When a fairy gives their heart, it's forever until it's over. When it's over, it's over forever until it's not. Fairy love is swift as a shadow, short as a dream, brief as lightning. It's devoted and inconstant, jealous and forgiving, heavy in its lightness and serious in its vanity. Its course, famously, never did run smooth.

Fairy law considers the heart to be the least reliable of organs.
Promises made by the heart are the least binding of promises; favors done by the heart are the most like gifts; gifts given by the heart are the most like loans.

For human beings:

Same.

Example:

Everyone knows that Tip the Lantern Jack will fall in love with the River Queen, if only the River Queen will smile at her once and mean it.
This, ultimately, happens.

It happens at a time when there's a strain between the circus and the River Queen, as the circus hasn't respected her hospitality as fully as she’d hope and demand. "Her smile's genuine," the MC says, "it really is, but of course you already revealed to her that you'd fall in love with her if she smiled at you. If you think it's calculated, that's your call."

“No," Tip says. "Or maybe. But even if it is calculated, if she wants me to fall in love with her, I want it too. I was right, she smiles at me and I fall in love with her."

There are no rules for what this means or how it changes what happens next. What will come of it? Who knows!

Under Hollow Hills is one of my favorite TTRPGs. I ran a ten-session campaign during the pandemic over Discord that started with my players catching Satan’s attention in the first performance and ending with the circus performing for all of Hell’s assembled demons to hype them up before Armageddon.
The front cover of Under Hollow Hills. It shows a star-spangled horse rearing up on its hind legs, with the following text arranged around it like a circus poster:

Meguey and Vincent Baker
Present

UNDER HOLLOW HILLS

The One

The Only

A Roleplaying Game

Come Great, Come Small
Come Revelers All
The back cover of Under Hollow Hills, A Role Playing Game

The summary text reads:

There is a traveling circus under the
Hollow Hills. It travels the night world and the day; fairyland and the mortal world, and no border stays it.

You are its cast and its crew, its ringmaster, its roustabouts, its clowns and its stars. You are the Boondoggle Hob, the Crooked Wand, the Chieftain Mouse, and the Winding Rose. You're fairykind and humankind: you're the Lostling, a mortal human being fostered in fairyland, and the Interloper, stolen into fairyland in disguise to make away with fairy treasures.
You're the Crowned Stag, child and heir of the King of the Woods; you're the Lantern Jack, friend to fireflies and misleader of travelers; you're the Nightmare Horse, drowner and beguiler, dweller in the deep water under the reflected moon.

You are the circus and the circus is you. You go where you choose and where you go, you change.

You have dangerous truths to tell...

#2 is a game I’ve played quite a bit of: Eclipse Phase! Humanity has transcended death and scarcity, but still falls victim to factionalism, greed and prejudice. Military artificial superintelligences turn on us, leaving Earth an interdicted wasteland. Everyone is future-shocked and traumatized.
The front cover of Eclipse Phase. The illustration shows a figure in a vacsuit, rocketing away from a pursuing swarm of robots that appear to be reaching for it. The figure holds a laser pistol, desperately firing into the swarm. The rings of Saturn serve as the background.

The book is marked Posthuman Studios, with the subtitle, “The Role Playing Game of Transhuman Survival.”

Wild Talents: Progenitor, a superpowered alternate history starting in 1968. What happens when Amanda Sykes, a Kansas housewife, somehow absorbs 2% of the universe’s dark energy and gains the ability to do pretty much anything? 40 years worth of terrible things. She starts by going to Vietnam.
The front cover of Wild Talents: Progenitor, by Greg Stolze. The illustration shows a giant figure reaching ominously toward two smaller figures wearing rice hats and firing rifles at it. Behind it, a helicopter hovers over one shoulder, and another smaller figure fires a green blast of energy at its other shoulder, partially disintegrating it. Wild Talents: Progenitor, back cover. It reads:

PROGENITOR
How Will Your Power Change the World?

In 1967, one woman inexplicably gains inconceivable power. Trying to use that power for the good of her country, she unwittingly passes it on to a handful of people. They pass it along to others in turn.

Soon thousands of men and women around the world have amazing powers. Some of them use their powers for their own personal gain or gratification. Others try to help those around them. Some change the very course of world events.

Progenitor is a Wild Talents roleplaying game setting that explores the shape of the world as we knew it in the last part of the 20th century-and the changes that are wrought by metahumans year by year. It tracks the alternate history of the world in rich detail from the moment the Progenitor, Amanda Sykes, gains her incredible powers, to the year when a single low-powered metahuman nearly destroys the Earth, to Amanda Sykes' strange departure from the global scene.

The world is yours to build and explore using the rules in this book.

Progenitor includes:

• Dozens of fascinating characters described in depth, plus the world-spanning movements and new nations that they establish.

• Social Metrics: rules and guidelines for shaping the course of history as you play and exploring how the world reacts to the players' actions. A "one roll" chart generates major developments year by year that can be built into new scenarios and entire campaigns.

• Guidelines for gadgeteers' effects on society.

• Rules for "syntergenics," memes crafted by activists with superhuman intelligence to affect human behavior with an image and to change the world with an idea.

There is endless room for player characters to shape history for good or for ill—or to simply try to protect the things that matter to them most as the pressures around them build and build....

As a writer and a human being, I think about this passage from Peter Watts’ Blindsight quite a bit. It’s a bleak, depressing view of the species, but goddamn if there aren’t people out there who would approach first contact this way.
Excerpt from pp. 261 of Blindsight, by Peter Watts. The text reads:

This is how you break down the wall:

Start with two beings. They can be human if you like, but that's hardly a prerequisite. All that matters is that they know how to talk among themselves.

Separate them. Let them see each other, let them speak. Perhaps a window between their cages. Perhaps an audio feed. Let them practice the art of conversation in their own chosen way.

Hurt them.

It may take a while to figure out how. Some may shrink from fire, others from toxic gas or liquid. Some creatures may be invulnerable to blowtorches and grenades, but shriek in terror at the threat of ultrasonic sound. You have to experiment; and when you discover just the right stimulus, the optimum balance between pain and injury, you must inflict it without the remorse.

You leave them an escape hatch, of course. That's the very point of the exercise: give one of your subjects the means to end the pain, but give the other the information required to use it. To one you might present a single shape, while showing the other a whole selection. The pain will stop when the being with the menu chooses the item its partner has seen. So let the games begin. Watch your subjects squirm. If-when—they trip the off switch, you'll know at least some of the information they exchanged; and if you record everything that passed between them, you'll start to get some idea of how they exchanged it.

When they solve one puzzle, give them a new one. Mix things up. Switch their roles. See how they do at circles versus squares.
Try them out on factorials and Fibonaccis. Continue until Rosetta Stone results.

This is how you communicate with a fellow intelligence: You hurt it, and keep on hurting it, until you can distinguish the speech from the screams.
