I'M RICH!
A computer game (toy?) with a mahogany desk covered in gold coins, emeralds, rubies, diamonds. In the center, on the dragon's horde is a wooden box, with an unfeatured circle set into the front panel, which is inset from the side.

I don't post much during April 1st—the signal to noise ratio isn't great—but imposter syndrome says today's a good day to show art. I'm experimenting with this photo-turned-graphic-novel style and some of the stuff is coming out nice. (Yes—that's an emdash—I use emdashes now—I'm hip and cool.)
A digitally composted image of a woman with some sort of hacking rig attached to the side of her head, a piece of glass fit over her eye with text displaying. She is looking at a computer screen on the right as well. The background is some unidentified tech stuff in red and green hues, blurred and out of focus. She is outlined in black, giving the image the look of a graphic novel.

I was a bit mid on the temp logo for Piece of Work, but uh. Well, on the right background, the thing slaps. Take a look. (Background cc-by from www.vecteezy.com/free-vector/...)
Piece of Work logo treatment. Circutboard background with logo in noir stylings in shades of gray. Glitch marks make the otherwise sans serif font look lightly distorted.

I cannot speak for use of these in terms of game development *specifically*, but GitLab is pretty well respected as a git provider. I've used it in a few jobs. Is alright!

It's a reminder that we ourselves generate the value from our communities, that it evolves out of our interactions. It is not a product served up by an organization. It comes from genuine connection. I'm so lucky to know good people and to keep meeting good people.

In all, I had four really solid days of games, socializing, meeting new people, and connecting. I have no less than two new games to make. And here's the funny, awkward part: I feel like Breakout con did almost none of the work to make that experience.

Sunday we reprised our table from the Zone plus a few eager faces to play Outgunned. The game felt like the spiritual successor to Feng Shui, with a more modern approach to mechanics and great visual design. We had a romp, and there were both car explosions and mystic tech.

I also picked up THIS gem and am looking forward to pouring over its redacted pages. The authors were even very patient with me asking for an autograph. Lovely people, and a fun looking game.

I also got to meet other game designers. I sat down with Cat Ramen of Red Carnations on a Black Grave fame and talked about everything from box games to chess. I'd say that accidentally, I ended up at a designer heavy convention just based on who I lucked into meeting.

I kept meeting people organically, mostly through my friend Gene, or Lauren, both of whom were ever present and always game for an adventure. Lauren ran The Zone for a truly immersive run. None of us got what we hoped to get, but perhaps all of us got what we deserved.
Final game state, where each character met a horrible end.My character, the Writer, looking for a muse in the worst of places, afraid of when all things would stop.

Later, I found myself at a table with Sam Dunnewald (@diceexploder) playing Magical Athlete, a game which has poked holes in my whole understanding of games, despite (or in fact, *because* of) being slightly more interesting Candyland. We had an amazing time and I lost every game.

City of Mist is a gorgeous game that I sadly hadn't gotten to try. The GM was excellent, the production quality was top notch, and the table was fire. I played Job, the priest that can't die. It was genuinely the perfect con game.

The brew pub came about because I heard about a local gaming concern that does hosted RPGs. The group was changelinggaming.ca and I signed up for (with two other friends) a game of City of Mist.

Food options within the hotel were limited. A food court underneath shut down on the weekend. This would have been a bummer but Toronto has amazing food options within a ten minute walk of the hotel. I had some amazing ramen, an amazing Italian restaurant, and a hip ballpark-themed brew pub.

The space is lovely, if sprawling. Other events ran at the same time, which led to clashes in public spaces. The vibe was more classic nerd. Not so many costumes, not many wargamers. Instead the vibe was more FLGS.

I decided to come to the con somewhat late, about six weeks ago. I didn't buy a badge until the day of the con, and I didn't register for any events. I'm quite happy with all my choices and I had a great time, largely because I had great people to hang out with.

Breakout Con 2026, a thread. Context: Breakout is a Toronto-based gaming convention with a focus on board games. It runs at the same time as Comic Con, but is unaffiliated.

Also the Air Canada logo is cyberpunk as hell, this goes unnecessary hard
The Air Canada logo, bright red on solid black. The logo features a maple leaf where the stem of the leaf combines with a red circle giving it the feel of a logo you might find in Cyberpunk 2077.
