Together with Philips Foundation and We Share Forward Foundation (Switzerland), we have established ImpactBridge—a co‑funding alliance using catalytic capital to back early‑stage social enterprises improving diabetes and related NCD care in low‑ and middle‑income countries.
Several individuals gathered around a round meeting table in a modern room. A large screen displays the text “Launch of the Impact Bridge Partnership.” The table holds laptops, notebooks, and drinks, and a contemporary chandelier hangs overhead.

How does #diabetes affect women in the workforce—especially in low- and middle-income countries?
Text on a red background reads: “How does diabetes affect work in low- and middle-income countries? Millions around the world face challenges managing their health while staying active in the workplace. Informal workers account for nearly 60% of the global workforce. In LMICs, it is up to 90%. These workers are often without protection, paid leave, or access to care. Women are overrepresented in informal and unpaid work. They often care for others while managing their own diabetes—making their employment more precarious. ” Source: OECD (2024)

How do you scale up care in a country where majority lives in rural areas? In Eswatini, it's through community-driven innovation and strong partnerships. Led by Ministry of Health and supported by partners, a WDF-supported project is decentralising care to primary facilities and remote communities.

In Benin’s Atlantique region, where communities live on water, a WDF-supported project is transforming access to care. Last week, our Programme Managers, Yves Kesse and Mads Mundt traveled to assess progress in three remote lake health centres — serving over 53,000 people.

Despite NCDs causing 15 million premature deaths annually, 85% of which occur in LMICs, funding remains critically insufficient. Achieving SDG target 3.4 would require an additional $18 billion per year, yet this investment could save 39 million lives and generate $2.7 trillion in economic benefits.

While in Senegal, Elsa Morandat and Sanne Frost Helt witnessed the example set by the NCD division as they decentralise diabetes and hypertension care and prevention. With clear roles laid out for every primary care facility they are leading the way in ensuring effective healthcare delivery.

A WDF-backed project in São Paulo, led by FENAD, empowers associations in low-income areas through training and peer support, helping to establish and empower associations. Strong diabetes associations help people manage their health, make informed choices, and connect with a supportive community. 💙

Achieving global health equity is a marathon, not a sprint. Since 2002, we’ve supported those often overlooked—people living with diabetes and other NCDs in low- and middle-income countries. Here on Bluesky, we’re excited to share, connect, and inspire action. 👋
