Problem 4: Afterthought Themes. The Fix: Weave theme into your story & setting from the beginning.

Problem 5: External character arcs. The Fix: Give your protagonist a belief that the plot will challenge.

Speculative fiction writers can fall in love with their premise, then write a story that explores a Big Idea... but isn't ABOUT anything deeper.

Problem 2: Is it a theme or a preachy message? The Fix: Change statements to questions and let readers make their own decisions.
