#OnThisDayInHistory, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" premieres in 1961. Originally meant to be a show starring Carl Reiner playing basically himself, the lead role was recast and the rest is history.

#OnThisDayInHistory, Jack The Ripper gets his name when the Central News Agency in London gets a letter thusly signed confessing to gruesome murders and promising more in 1888. This is different than Jack Tripper, who got his name from some Hollywood writers.

#OnThisDayInHistory, the United States gets its nickname, "Uncle Sam," in 1813. It comes from meat packer Samuel Wilson, whose beef barrels he supplied to the army became referred to as "Uncle Sam's" meat. At least, that's the story Congress went with.
