Usually an outline, but that can vary depending on the project.

The Lion of Lark-Hayes Manor by Aubrey Hartman. What price would you pay for a little magic? What happens when people forget the stories that made them who they are? I loved it. Poppy is one of the characters who would’ve made middle school me feel seen. #BeAnAmbassador

A girl with dark hair wearing a purple long sleeved shirt and blue pants hugs the head of a large, white lion. Digital illustration created in Procreate. (Illustration of the characters Poppy and Sampson from The Lion of Lark-Hayes Manor.)

Taking my cue from Kate Messner, I’m going to try to do a better job sharing books I loved. I loved reading Growing Home by Beth Ferry this week. With illustrations by the Fan brothers, a grumpy goldfish, a bibliophile spider and a pair of plants with superpowers, what’s not to love? #BeAnAmbassador

Digital illustration. Aerial view of a goldfish swimming around an octagonal fish bowl. There is an infinity symbol at the bottom of the bowl. A little water splashes over the side. The table is brown and the floor is pale yellow.

I’m a librarian… thank you. (It’s been rough, absurd sailing for a few years now.) I so appreciate your words.

If you haven’t read her Squirrel Girl books, they make me smile (and I’m very sorry there’s only two of them.)

No Mahjong In my repertoire, but my work does have a healthy dose of whimsy. Thanks for the opportunity!

Pen and ink drawing of a smiling girl surrounded by floating books against a dark background.

Colored pencil drawing of a large yellow dragon circling a small red dragon against a starry blue sky background.

Water color and ink painting of Peter Pan holding Tinker Bell. The background is a blue starry sky.

LOTR if he hasn’t read it yet. I remember reading Momo by Michael Ende at 14 or 15. The villains are men in grey who swindle people by convincing them to deposit their free time in a time saving bank and it still impacts the way I think about spending free time.

I love his use of light, the luminous look that was a trademark of his posters.

Oh, Drew Struzan. Most movie posters are digital these days, but there was something truly luminous about his work. (I am partial to his Indiana Jones work, but he made posters for so many other movies, Muppets, Star Wars, and Back to the Future to name a few.)

I have a family member with autism whom I love dearly. This line got me: “That instead of the stares and the whispers, they would be curious and brave, like children who only want to understand.” Yes. A thousand times, yes.

The rest of the illustration needs a bit of work, but I quite like how this very blue bird turned out. (Brush and blue ink.)

A blue ink painting of a bird. The viewer is behind the bird, which is perched on a ledge.

Reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite books: Momo by Michael Ende. There’s a tortoise that says, “More haste, less speed.”

Not quite a “cult” but I recently enjoyed the MG fantasy the Callers by Kia’s Thomas. One side of a world has convinced people they can conjure items by magic, when really, they’re stealing from the other side of the world.
