A happy late #Caturday from these very cautious ferals!

When you stare into the void, the void... stares back demanding to know why it hasn't already been fed. #Saturday #officecat #morningvisitor

Convincing you to read my (collection of interrelated novellas) by the first sentence. Share yours if you want! Here's how "Sodom & Gomorrah on a Saturday Night" begins:
Text from the first line of the novella collection "Sodom & Gomorrah on a Saturday Night" reads: "When the government outlawed empathy, no one protested it much."

It has taken me the better part of a whole year to read this book all the way through, but it feels somehow, deeply ironically fitting to come to the end & find this observation at the very moment of the attempt to undermine the #Smithsonian. #blackhistory #Americanhistory
Paperback cover of the book "Living With Music" by author Ralph Ellison, depicting the business end of a trumpetI've had an interest in African art. But as far as identifying with Africa, I've never identified with Africa. Now I'm not denying my Afro-blood at all. But there's a complex mass of cultures over there. I can hardly remember the tribes these figures represent and live with these things every day. So l wouldn't get any strength from that. My strength comes from Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Rushing, Hot Lips Page
and people on that level, Duke Ellington, Mrs. Breaux, Mark Twain--all kinds of American figures who have been influenced by and contributed to that complex interaction of background and cultures which is specifically American.

O'Meally: Is it important to stress Afro-American? Is it contradictory?

Ellison: It's not contradictory. Much of what's called white American culture wouldn't be what it is without us. And we don't know where we sound and where we stand and where we are visible in the best of American culture. We've been more segregated than the white folks actually intended us to be! If I can't read the best of American literature and recognize where it's been influenced by our presence, and our
forms of expression, then I shouldn't call myself a critic. I shouldn't call myself a writer.

Saw a YouTube video abt regrowing bok choy from kitchen scraps; decided to try it w Romaine. The apparent roots are teeny tiny and the leaves sure look happy so maybe? #gardening #growingvegetables

This should be apparent to anyone disturbed by the attention on abolishing no-fault divorces. It's a multi-front offensive (pun intended).
Excerpt from this article: "...because if a state can, as Prelogar put it, force people to “look and live like boys and girls,” subject to the government’s definition of what that means, then a lot more people might be affected. As Justice Sonia Sotomayor pointed out during oral argument, for many years, some states prevented women from becoming butchers or lawyers. Women could not have their own credit cards or bank accounts until the 1970s. If it’s not unconstitutional sex discrimination for the government to say that people cannot behave “inconsistent with their sex,” well now you’re really talking about a lot of people—a lot more people than the rather tiny population included in the category of “they/them” that the Trump campaign was hoping you feel disgust and contempt for."

Anyway, one of my store bought onions started sprouting, but was looking bedraggled until I planted it in soil, made it cozy with a good thick layer of leaf mulch, and gave it a good soak in the rain. Hopefully will have yellow onions in spring! #gardening

This year #Christmas is tight again, as it is for so many of us, but I'm extraordinarily blessed with a couple of great kids who gifted me not only the SUP-yak I asked for, but also accessories like this cooler to go w it, a surprise new raccoon stuffie, & herb seeds for next year's garden 🥰
A stuffed raccoon peeks out from inside a blue and gray cooler bag. Packets of flower seeds are also in frame.

It would be so easy to just go across the parking lot for a cup and a table where I could work. I could even justify the $6+, even if I can't write it off. But I'm choosing to stay in this small lobby to wait on car service. #respectthepicketline

I haven't written much over the last 4 months, and I think on a level deeper than I could name, this observation of Alan Watts' is why: writing has been a way for me to avoid and "make sense of" life rather than participate in all its chaos. #writinglife

I'm getting into crime scene photography. Obvious signs of a struggle between the feathers and the overturned food bowl. The office cats are mysteriously absent. #whodunnit 🙀

My leg that she's resting on is really wanting to move and let the other one be the resting place, but I'm overriding it. She's too comfy to disturb. #dogsofbluesky
