Ready for iOS 27, I’ve released the Ferrite 3.3 update. Includes significant speed boosts when exporting CAF or M4A files. Also released? Hokusai 3 and Hokusai for Mac! Huge update/new app! And have I mentioned how much I like Liquid Glass in the 27 OSen?

A USB Audio Device is connected, with 8 channels, each with their own VU meter arranged around the record button, which softly reflects their green bars. They also have dotted lines indicating the recent peak audio level.Below, the Headphone Monitoring menu button, the Input Gain dial, and the Normalise Recording switch.

Today, I want to pull back the curtain on Hokusai 3 — going into TestFlight beta testing soon, I'm looking for plenty of people to kick the tyres. Rewritten from the ground up, with a beautiful, colourful new design and a _whole bunch_ of the most requested features!

It was kinda basic at the time; looking back, I'm amazed it worked at all: we still had to support devices with just 128MB of memory, half reserved for iOS! Since then, the biggest change was Hokusai 2, which adopted a very “flat” design. It's... okay? This is what's currently in the App Store:
A screenshot of Hokusai 2 running on iPad in 2019. Retina resolution, flat design, lightweight glass sidebar and modern icons. It looks much cleaner, but also very plain.

About 15 years ago (summer 2011) we released Hokusai Audio Editor. It looked like this — before Retina, when the only screen sizes were “iPhone” or “iPad” and you had to design each in a separate file:
A screenshot of Hokusai 1 running on iPad back in 2011. Non-retina, with a skeuomorphic wood-grain background and some very dated-looking buttons.

A lot's changed since then! From MP3 export to multichannel recording to Apple Pencil and mouse support, customisable keyboard shortcuts, windowing, auto levelling, advanced search and smart folders, and much more!

Exactly 10 years ago today, Ferrite 1.0 was released to the App Store! It's been a pretty wild decade. Here's to 10 years of Ferrite, and many more to come…

And finally, there's one more thing I hope to be able to announce soon:

First up, Ferrite: • Continue exports in background, track progress in a Live Activity (note: it'll still be possible for exports to get cancelled if other apps require too many resources) • Lightly updating UI for Liquid Glass. Don't expect complete rethink — that's not something to rush into.

Ran into a weird word-wrap issue in something I’m working on in SwiftUI. Was it a problem with my text rendering? My Markdown parsing? A bug in SwiftUI? Nope! Turns out, I stumbled on a glitch somewhere in Cocoa’s text engine — plain old TextEdit has exactly the same weird behaviour:
A screenshot of macOS TextEdit, with some text typed in to it. First, some commentary reads “Why does the list of file extensions word-wrap weirdly? They have spaces between them — standard ones, not   or anything:”. Then, an example paragraph which reads “Audio can be stored in different formats, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Hokusai can import audio in many of the common ones so you can use them in your projects: .wav, .mp3, .m4a, .flac, .caf and many more.”. This paragraph is strangely word-wrapped, where the line breaks with plenty of space left. Then, more commentary: “Adding extra spaces, or en- or em-spaces, doesn’t help either. But if you manually insert “zero width space” (Unicode U+200B) between them, it works as expected:”. Finally, a second copy of the example paragraph, this time correctly wrapped.

The cover art for the album “Dummy” by Portishead. Plain blue background, in the centre is a widescreen-format image of a dark-haired woman wearing blue, sitting in a chair, facing the camera, several spotlights nearby illuminating a smoky atmosphere.
