I made this for an old professor and friend who is about to be honored by Prescott College naming a courtyard after him. Congrats Doug! #PrescottCollege #WoodWorking #EnvironmentalEducation
This 12"x7" wooden sign is carved into a light to medium caramel colored piece of what I think is a type of cedar. It reads "Doug Hulmes National Courtyard, Prescott, Arizona" on three separate lines of text. Three icons typical of National Park Service signs indicate hiking, mountains, and the planet Earth. The shape is the typical National Forest offset trapezoid with rounded corners.

Chattanooga, TN. Few cities boast such interesting terrain. And this video very explicitly shows a typical CNC terrain carving process. The wenge is quite beautiful, and when lacquer is applied, the color becomes a complex near-black. #TimeLapse #Chattanooga #CNC #ScienceArt #vCarve

Sourcing wood like this is difficult. Defects like this bark inclusion are often tossed aside, but the local sawyers here in Kentucky manage to keep me supplied. This carving focus on Bright Angel Canyon and its intersection with the Colorado River in the heart of the Grand Canyon. #GrandCanyon

This heart-on-heart piece was carved using actual Martian surface data and a slice of a tree limb I cut myself. The heart-shaped crater sits at the top right in the setting created by the heart-shaped maple. It's all placed in a larger thermal poplar frame with a gold foil background. #SciArt
A heart-shaped maple slice approximately 8 inches wide is set into red colored resin before being carved with a model of the Martian surface. The dominant colors come from the dark brown frame, the deep rose but translucent resin, and the sandy tones of the maple. Craters and a shallow canyon running from bottom left to top right dominate the surface. This shot is a close-up of the top right corner of the carving showing the heart-shaped Martian crater. All four elements are visible: The dark brown frame, the red or rose colored resin, and the lighter tan of the maple heart. Gold foil can be seen through the resin, especially at its thinnest point at the center of the heart-shaped crater. Wood tones and aplanetary surface are combined in surprising and delightful ways.

I made this frame specifically for this original woodpecker print from @solsticehandmade.bsky.social. It's made from red cedar and copper, and the colors accentuate the plumage of these awesome birds, many of which can be seen from the window near which this picture now hangs. #Birds #Woodworking
An artistic impression of eight different woodpeckers alighting upon a tree is framed with an unusual and striking red cedar and copper frame. The frame features two copper rods, one running along each vertical side.

Heating poplar in a vacuum caramelizes the sugars, turning the color almost black. Here, the 'Face on Mars' is placed on a walnut base featuring Kaiser Crater, Mars, where the glossy lacquer contrasts with the far more satin tung oil of the poplar, serving as a study in albedo. #SpaceArt #Mars

It sits atop a natural edge piece of walnut finished in glossy lacquer. This glossy piece of natural edge walnut features a Martian crater carved into its surface. A horizontal cutout 'trench' serves as the base for the poplar carving.

The idea of using oil to preserve wood is an ancient one. This image shows the Face on Mars carved into a hunk of maple before and after the application of several coats of pure tung oil, and the difference is striking. #SciArt #Mars #Woodworking
This image shows the Face on Mars carved into a maple square. On the left is the unfinished carving, and on the right is the same carving after several coats of 100% pure tung oil are applied. The appearance change is rather striking. The left side is light in color and shows some banding. The right side is much darker and exhibits a far greater variety if shades and colors.

Here is the interior of Jezero Crater, Mars carved into red cedar. The voids filled with blue resin speak to the feature's water-sculpted past. This space terrain carving is available for purchase at the maker-owned Artisans Coop: artisans.coop/pages/seller... #SpaceArt #BSNM #Woodworking
A rectangular wooden Martian terrain carving is held up against the sun. The red cedar is striking, as are the two patches of clear blue that sit along the carving's bottom edge. Two knots in the wood seem to send electrical impulses across the delta, making for a surreal presentation of the extra-terrestrial surface. A white hickory frame presents the terrain, and trees and a blue sky are visible in the background.

Sharing my carvings with others in the building where the scientists created the instruments that gather the Martian terrain data was a surreal experience. Gratitude to the organizers and all the other awesome space artists who took part! #SpaceArt #LPL
This rectangular, clear, acrylic award contains the text "ART PLANETARY SCIENCE 2026," "THEME ART FIRST PLACE," and "Scott Rennie." There is some fancy, marble looking adornment near the base. The award is mostly translucent. It is placed on a table saw and in the sunlit background is the wooded area surrounding the artist's workshop. This photo shows the artist to the left of the photograph pointing to the table where three of his Martian terrain carvings sit. Three visitors are seen to the right of the image viewing the carvings. The number "4" is visible, along with a brick wall and a bright orange metal beam.

There is no higher honor in my little world than having my work recognized by the providers of the Martian surface data used in my carvings. The big cedar piece depicting a singular dune was chosen as their 2026 art show's theme winner! See you in Tucson! lpl.arizona.edu/art/ #spaceart #planetsci
Three wooden terrain carvings depicting the Martian surface using data prepared by UofA's LPL. The carvings all depict dune features. The larger two are about two feet wide, with one depicting a singular barchan dune. The smallest carving features a crater and surrounding dunes and has a resin-filled crack splitting the landscape vertically in two.

This was an ordinary yellow pine 2x4. I filled the knotty void with gold resin and then carved this wind-sculpted Martian scene. The yellow coloring in the crater is natural to the wood and is complemented by the resin and rosewood base. More like this at artisans.coop. #Mars #LPL #Woodworking #CNC
This carving depicts a Martian crater surrounded by dunes on almost all sides. The lee of the crater is dune-free. The sideways-mounted 2x4 is connected to the gold and rosewood rectangular base with a piece of copper pipe. An odd but natural yellow color is visible inside the crater, along with the gold-flaked resin and bark inclusions.

This is a 3/4 view from above the front of a cribbage board carved into walnut. A large mountain emerges from the rear of the carving, and the land recedes below the scoring pegs at the front. The effect is quite dramatic. Several lakes are carved into the landscape and filled with resin. This is a 3/4 view from above the rear of the carving. The mountain rises about an inch above the scoring surface before it descends to about an inch below the scoring surface at the front of the carving. Several resin-filled lakes are visible, along with the brown-colored walnut. This side view of the carving again shows the terrain both rising above and falling below the central horizontal scoring plane. The solid walnut grain is visible both on the terrain and the vertical sides of the oval-shaped cribbage board.

This sign is a play on the iconic signs used by the National Forest Service. It imagines a private RV as a federally recognized place. It is carved with three symbols: a bear, an RV, and a small group of trees. The name "Rennie" and the words "National Recreation Vehicle" and "Pigeon Forge, Tennessee" are carved in a font used by the Forest service. The red cedar is striking in appearance, and the shadows highlight the carved images and words.

This piece was a bit of an experiment. It is essentially an end-grain cutting board with a wood block print carved into it. The customer (and this guy!) couldn't be happier with how it turned out. It's made from walnut, hickory, and one thin piece of red cedar. #BSNM #Art #woodblockprints
This is a 5"x7" end-grain glue-up of brown walnut strips and light-colored hickory squares arranged along a thin horizontal dividing line of eastern red cedar. The wood grain is arranged to produce both a swirling wave design interspersed with a checkerboard pattern. The wood grain nearly disappears in this finished carving. The alternating brown and tan vertical lines dominate the carving, and the bright red horizontal dividing line provides a bit of contrast. A repeating abstract pattern covers the rectangular carving with truncated corners.
