Yes, the State of Texas offers residents a library card for university libraries but at a cost of something like $60.

This display--which is wonderful--should include Friedrich Torberg's novella _Vengeance Is Mine_.

Me, too. Was at the University of Texas, Austin, in the Russian Dept. and on the staff of _Slavic Review_ in the 80s, many Jewish émigrés. Wonder how they see things here, now.

Please add this to your list: Else Jerusalem's 1908 _Red House Alley_, a social critique of prostitution in the form of a bildungsroman. I translated it with Recovered Books, U. of East Anglia Press, Stephanie Gorrell Ortega

Just a suggestion: use active rather than passive voice and indicative rather than subjunctive (hypothetical) mood, e.g., "where Nazis likely murdered her on arrival."

What about Bertha van Hoosen? Just found a note in my great-grandmother's diary they had been friends.

Thank you for your good words! Many thanks for spotting the parallel with Segher's novel. Steffi, the translator

Thank you for posting your positive response to Vengeance is Mine. I translated it. I very much liked your comparison to Segher's Seventh Cross. Though those two authors were politically diametrically opposed, they shared a specific generational use of language, and you spotted that: thank you.

Must have been a wonderful class! After years of amassing teaching materials, I began lighting an end-of-the-semester fire in the chiminea. The syllabi were in my computer files with the roster of students'names.

Loved this post about books about riding trains, esp. Mayröcker's work. Rilke found the "train experience" sublime because one can be one's self with others in the knowledge he will never again have to see these people.

Once again I learn from you. Yad Vashem skips over the traumatic events you document. Gonna look into interlibrary loan.

What would you say of Holingdale's translation? Fontane's prose is lyrical, very unlike the philosophical works he was known for translating; a wholly different kind of work.

Friedrich Torberg tried to destroy her once she was back in Vienna. She could write.
