And finally, how that same reference evolved. Once Jorin and Erik were established, I de-aged their features to create Todd, using ACR and Liquify to tweak his features and demeanour as he grows from a curious 13 to a dad at 15 while maintaining a strong family resemblance to his brothers.

Black slide with a large yellow heading at the top: “The twins and their brother”. Below are five black-and-white portrait reference images arranged in two rows on a black background. The top row contains two larger portraits of the identical twins at age eighteen. On the left is Jorin, shown front-facing with hair tied up and a slightly longer beard. Caption: “Jorin, 18. The more stoic, introverted twin. Slightly longer beard, green-hazel eyes.” On the right is Erik, shown with a buzzcut, a slightly shorter beard and a more tilted, confident pose. Caption: “Erik, 18. The more cocky, extroverted twin. Slightly shorter beard, honey-hazel eyes.”

The bottom row contains three smaller portraits of their younger brother Todd at different ages. On the left is Todd at thirteen. Caption: “Todd, 13. Softer facial structure, heavier freckling, no facial hair.” In the centre is Todd at fourteen. Caption: “Todd, 14. Adolescent moustache, lowering sideburns, beginnings of goatee growth.” On the right is Todd at fifteen. Caption: “Todd, 15. More facial definition, thicker goatee, beard filling in along the jaw.”

All five images are monochrome reference portraits in the same refined line-and-graphite style, showing how the twins and their younger brother share a clear family resemblance while differing in expression, haircut and facial-hair development.

And the character side of it was just as involved. This example shows the rough sketch and base reference that became Jorin and Erik as identical twins, and from there the foundation for Todd as their younger brother

Black 4:5 process slide titled “About the character design” in large yellow type.

Body text reads: “The characters began as rough sketches based on my mental image of their features, then translated into line-and-graphite drawings or photographic imagery using generative tools. These were refined in Photoshop using Liquify and Camera Raw to fine-tune facial structure, tone and texture, and Clone Stamp and Healing tools to correct artefacts and inconsistencies. From these, base reference images were established and developed into sets covering different ages, expressions, hairstyles and details such as facial-hair development. The final images were then composited and finished by hand. The example below shows the reference development for the identical twins and their younger brother.”

Below the text, a rough blue ballpoint sketch on lined notebook paper shows a young bearded man with a topknot. A yellow arrow points from this to a polished black-and-white line-and-graphite portrait of the same character, with carefully defined facial structure, freckles, hair and beard.

A second yellow arrow points down to a wide strip of eight black-and-white character portraits showing how one original sketch was expanded into a family reference system. The base face was used to create Jorin and Erik as identical twins, then de-aged and adjusted to create their younger brother Todd with a clear family resemblance. The sequence shows the characters across ages 13, 14, 15, 18, 22, 28, 33 and 38, tracking changes in facial structure, hairstyle and facial-hair development while keeping the shared features that make them recognisably related.

Now the design bit. I’m a communications designer by profession, so I wanted these to work as a visual system rather than five covers that just happen to sit together. This is some of what went into building that.

And finally, Wolf: The New Pack. This is the longest arc of the series, following Todd’s son from infancy into adulthood. The book is about growing up early, naming yourself, finding your pack and becoming part of a generation that refuses to be boxed in. Coming in 2029. 💛

Black 4:5 promotional slide for Wolf: The New Pack. At the top is the full wraparound book cover in muted olive and pale blue, with the series’ radiating graphic-line background. The front cover features large pale blue vertical “WOLF” lettering, the title The New Pack and the series smiley icon in the upper right. The main cover image is a portrait of Wolf as a teenager with tousled dark hair, light facial hair and a calm, direct expression, wearing a plain white T-shirt. The author name, Odin Thorsen, appears near the bottom.

The pale blue spine carries the title vertically, a small inset portrait of Wolf and a black author block at the bottom. The back cover is headed “WOLF THE NEW PACK” and identifies the book as book four of the Odinssen series. Beneath the blurb is a colour image of three teenage boys sitting together on a concrete step with skateboards at their feet. Wolf in the middle wears a white T-shirt and dark shorts and has an arm around each of the boys beside him. Ethan on the left wears a black T-shirt and denim shorts, while Mason on the right wears a dark T-shirt and denim shorts.

Below the cover, large text reads: “WOLF: THE NEW PACK” followed by the subheading: “Twenty years of becoming Wolf.”

Body text reads: “The final story spans Milo’s infancy to adulthood, with Todd too often putting his son before himself. Drawing on my own experience, the story follows Milo as his adolescence begins years earlier than expected. Todd blames himself for passing on the ‘curse’ his twin brothers endured, but uses their hindsight to raise Milo without shame around his differences. Facing bullying and unwanted attention at school, Milo chooses the name Wolf for himself and, alongside his best friends Ethan and Mason, grows up as part of a generation that defies conventional labels, turning the openness he was raised with into something that reaches far beyond home, while his family continues to build a future none of them could have imagined back in 1998.”

Black 4:5 release-date slide for Wolf: The New Pack. Large text at upper left reads “Coming: 2029” in pale blue and muted khaki. Beneath it is a vertical navigation strip representing the five books in the series. The first four entries appear above in coral, mint green, yellow and blue-grey, while the final Wolf entry is highlighted at the bottom in muted olive with the word “WOLF”.

At upper right is the front cover of Wolf: The New Pack, showing the khaki radiating-line background, large vertical pale blue “WOLF”, the title The New Pack, the smiling icon and the portrait of Wolf in a white T-shirt.

The lower half expands the main supporting scene from back cover. A large colour image shows three teenage boys seated side by side on a low concrete step in front of a loading bay with a roller shutter behind them. In the centre is Wolf, wearing a white T-shirt and oversized dark denim shorts, sitting with his knees apart and one arm slung around each friend’s shoulders. On the left sits Ethan in a black T-shirt, long blue denim shorts and black socks, with a skateboard angled beside him. On the right sits Mason in a dark T-shirt, loose blue denim shorts and skate shoes, with another skateboard partly visible near his feet. All three have relaxed expressions and physical closeness, giving the image a strong sense of friendship, belonging and pack energy. The muted neutral background and casual skatewear keep the focus on the trio and reinforce the warm identity of the final book.

Next up 2000: Origins of the Bloodline. Todd is fifteen, already on the rise as a skateboarder, when a phone call home reveals a secret nobody in his family even knew existed. What follows is a story about fallout, shame, family, forgiveness when he’s forced to grow up too fast. Coming in 2028. 🩶

Black 4:5 promotional slide for 2000: Origins of the Bloodline. At the top is the full wraparound book cover in pale blue-grey, black and muted mauve, with radiating graphic lines. The front cover features large vertical “2000” typography, the title Origins of the Bloodline and a sad-face version of the series smiley icon in the upper right. The main cover image is a monochrome portrait of Todd, shown as a slim teenage boy with shaggy hair and soft facial hair, looking down while cradling a swaddled newborn baby in his arms. The author name, Odin Thorsen, appears near the bottom.

The mauve spine carries the title vertically, a small inset image of Todd holding the baby and a black author block at the bottom. The back cover is headed “2000 ORIGINS OF THE BLOODLINE” and identifies the book as book three of the Odinssen series. Beneath the blurb is a monochrome image of two teenage boys sitting on the ground side by side outside a building, Todd shirtless with shaggy hair and OC in a backwards cap and loose T-shirt, both in oversized jeans and skate shoes.

Below the cover, large text reads: “2000: ORIGINS OF THE BLOODLINE” followed by the subheading: “Nobody saw this coming.”

Body text reads: “When Todd, now fifteen, calls home holding his newborn son in a hospital room, his family have no idea there was even a pregnancy. Inspired by real events, the story explores peer pressure, bad choices, and the incredible damage people are capable of when desperate to keep up appearances. Todd makes tough decisions about his rapidly advancing skateboarding career, faces the fallout at school, and learns to forgive himself for being manipulated into betraying the love his family had always given him. Meanwhile, between university and building their company, Todd’s brothers are left confronting their own anger, guilt and disbelief that all of this happened right under their noses, while coming to terms with how close they came to never knowing their nephew.”

Black 4:5 release-date slide for 2000: Origins of the Bloodline. Large text at upper left reads “Coming: 2028” in muted mauve and pale blue-grey. Beneath it is a vertical navigation strip representing the five books in the series. The first two entries appear above in coral, mint green and yellow, the current 2000 entry is highlighted in blue-grey with “2000”, and one later book appears below in muted olive.

At upper right is the front cover of 2000: Origins of the Bloodline, showing the pale blue-grey radiating-line background, large vertical “2000”, the title, the sad-face icon and Todd holding a sleeping newborn wrapped in a blanket.

The lower half expands the main supporting scene from the book concept. A large monochrome blue-grey image shows two teenage boys sitting on the ground outside a stucco exterior wall of a motel. On the left, Todd is shirtless, slim and slightly tousled, with shaggy hair, faint facial hair and oversized jeans pooling over skate shoes. He sits with his knees up and his arms resting loosely on them, smiling across at the boy beside him. On the right, OC sits in a backwards baseball cap, loose T-shirt, oversized jeans and skate shoes facing towards Todd with a warm smile. A skateboard stands upright against the wall on the far left beside a vent or air-conditioning unit, while a door handle is visible on the right and a dark bag sits near the right edge. The cracked ground, relaxed posture and loose clothing give the scene a grounded skate-culture feel, while the cool monochrome treatment reinforces the more subdued, reflective identity of this book.

Then comes 1999: Summer of Origins. Two couples, two cars, two months. The twins, their partners and eventually Todd head into Europe for a messy, formative summer of travel, family history, attraction, freedom and figuring out who they are. Coming late 2027. 💛

Black 4:5 release-date slide for 1999: Summer of Origins. Large yellow text at upper left reads “Coming: Late 2027”. Beneath it is a vertical navigation strip representing the five books in the series. The first two entries appear above in coral and mint green, the current 1999 entry is highlighted in yellow with “1999”, and two later books appear below in blue-grey and muted olive.

At upper right is the front cover of 1999: Summer of Origins, using bright yellow and lime radiating lines, bold vertical “1999” typography, the title, the black Lemon skull icon and a yellow-tinted group portrait of Todd in front of his twin brothers and their partners.

The lower half expands the main photographic scene from the book concept. A large monochrome yellow-tinted image shows Todd and his twin brothers seated shirtless on a stone curb with Milan Cathedral in Piazza del Duomo behind them. Todd sits in the centre, younger and slighter, with shaggy hair, long shorts, white socks and skate shoes, looking sideways with a faint smile. On either side of him sit the identical twins, both with buzzcuts, short beards and open, affectionate expressions, turned towards Todd as though sharing a private moment. One wears a necklace with a small bone pendant saying “MUTT”. All three wear oversized shorts and skate shoes. Behind them rises the ornate Gothic façade of the cathedral, with surrounding buildings, a lamppost, crowds of pedestrians and a metro sign visible in the square. The whole scene is treated in the same bold yellow palette as the cover, reinforcing the book’s visual identity.

Next: 1998: Shaun’s Diaries. Same summer, this time through Shaun’s eyes. A companion to Sixty Days of Summer, getting inside the head of the person who always looks like he’s fine, even when he really isn’t. It’s meant to be read after the original. Coming early 2027. 💚

Black 4:5 promotional slide for 1998: Shaun’s Diaries. At the top is the full wraparound book cover in pale green and teal with radiating graphic lines. The front cover features large vertical “1998” typography, the title Shaun’s Diaries, a black smiley-face icon and a portrait of Shaun standing casually in a loose black T-shirt and jeans with his hands in his pockets. The teal spine carries the title vertically and a small portrait of Shaun above the black author block.

The back cover combines a handwritten diary extract with a photograph of Shaun sitting alone on a wooden bench at a skatepark, holding a beer bottle. He wears a black T-shirt, long cargo shorts, white socks and black skate shoes. Trees, mountains and concrete skate ramps sit behind him. A small banner identifies the book as the companion to 1998: Sixty Days of Summer.

Below the cover, large text reads: “1998: SHAUN’S DIARIES” followed by “The same summer through Shaun’s eyes.”

Body text reads: “From the outside, Shaun is the happy, loyal friend who makes everybody else’s lives not suck. He gets up smiling, slam after slam, and never lets anybody see when he needs them. Shaun’s late-night ADHD brain dumps tell the inner story of a dude who’s constantly afraid of fucking up, who thinks he’s not good enough and whose father’s emotional abuse taught him that needing anything from anybody makes him a burden. Over the summer, he discovers his own self-worth as he’s forced to make hard decisions about his future and begins to realise that real love doesn’t come with terms and conditions. As the companion book to 1998: Sixty Days of Summer, these diary entries are meant to be read afterwards. In memory of TE.”

Black 4:5 release-date slide for 1998: Shaun’s Diaries. Large teal and green text at upper left reads “Coming: Early 2027”. Beneath it is a vertical navigation strip representing the five books in the series. The original 1998 book appears in coral and the current Shaun’s Diaries entry is highlighted in pale green with “1998”, followed by yellow, blue-grey and muted olive markers for the later books.

At upper right is the front cover of 1998: Shaun’s Diaries, using pale green and teal radiating lines, bold vertical “1998” typography, the title, a black smiley-face icon and a full-length portrait of Shaun in a loose black T-shirt and jeans.

The lower half expands the photograph from the back cover. Shaun sits alone on a weathered wooden bench at an outdoor skatepark, leaning forward with his forearms resting near his knees and holding a brown beer bottle in both hands. His expression is thoughtful and slightly troubled rather than smiling. He wears a black T-shirt, faded cargo shorts, white socks and black skate shoes. Behind him are trees, distant mountains and concrete ramps under a muted, overcast sky.

First up: 1998: Sixty Days of Summer. 🛹 The book that started all of this, now being remastered as a second edition to reflect how much I’ve grown as a writer and storyteller since I first wrote it. Re-release: early 2027. 🧡

Black 4:5 promotional slide for 1998: Sixty Days of Summer. At the top is the full wraparound book cover in warm coral and orange tones with radiating graphic lines. The front cover features large vertical “1998” typography, the title Sixty Days of Summer, a black smiley-face icon and a sunset view of a fictional Vancouver through large windows, with an indoor halfpipe in the foreground and a skater silhouetted against the sunset. The back cover contains illustrated portraits of the main cast and the book blurb.

Below the cover, large text reads: “1998: SIXTY DAYS OF SUMMER” followed by “The book that started the series.”

Body text reads: “An autobiographical coming-of-age novel set in the summer of 1998, remixing actual events from my life throughout the 1990s into a fictional story arc. Identical twins Jorin and Erik embody my introvert and extrovert sides, with my ASD embedded in the way they interact with the world around them. Shaun honours the spirit of a deeply loved friend who left us far too soon. The crew is inspired by the personalities and dynamics of my own friends and the story explores my own experience of queerness in the ’90s West Coast skate scene. As this was my first novel, I am working on a remastered second edition to reflect my personal growth as an author and storyteller. It will be re-released in 2027.”

Black 4:5 release-date slide for 1998: Sixty Days of Summer. Large coral and orange text at upper left reads “Re-release: Early 2027”. Beneath it is a vertical navigation strip showing the 1998 book highlighted in coral, followed by coloured markers representing the later books in the series.

At upper right is the front cover of 1998: Sixty Days of Summer, using radiating lines, bold vertical “1998” typography, the title, a black smiley-face icon and the fictional Vancouver sunset halfpipe image.

The lower half expands that cover image into a dramatic sunset scene overlooking a fictional Vancouver. A wooden halfpipe curves across the foreground inside a high-rise space with floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, the sun is low over the water and mountains, the city skyline is visible to the right and a skater is caught mid-air against the orange sky.

So… my first book might have somehow turned into a five-book series 😅 I’ve been quietly writing the next stories, remastering the original and creating covers to tie them together as a series. 🧵 Books first, then a little about how I designed it all. #IndieAuthor #QueerFiction #Skateboarding

It’s been a long time coming—but my book 1998: Sixty Days of Summer is complete. 45 chapters, one crazy summer, and a crew that’s lived in my head for years. Finishing it feels a bit like a breakup. But who knows—maybe I’ll need to bring them back for a second book 🧡 www.wattpad.com/story/350674...

The book cover for 1998: Sixty Days of Summer by Odin Thorsen. The top half features a bold, sunburst pattern in orange with a large black smiley face and the title in retro block lettering: “1998” turned sideways, with “Sixty Days of Summer” in bold black and outlined fonts. The lower half shows a silhouette of a skateboarder mid-air in front of a panoramic window overlooking a vivid orange-and-purple sunset over Vancouver. Inside, a sleek half-pipe is visible. The author’s name appears at the bottom in orange.
