I don't care that they "lose" "often." The Padres are still the best team in the world in any sport.

I prefer using the term classic over retro for that reason. PS2, PS3, someday even PS5 can all become retro, but classic video games are 80s-early 90s forever.

In cars, fashion, tv shows, music, whatever, retro just means old. Things are retro when they were in style, went out of style, and are now stylish again in a nostalgic way. That said "classic" can refer to specific eras. 90s grunge rock has become retro, but "classic rock" is a specific time era.

Also, men: if you have any kind of dandruff you gotta use a dandruff shampoo. I naturally have dandruff but I use the correct shampoo for it and now straight up *don't*. It comes back if I'm away from my shampoo. Ymmv, ofc. But you gotta be at least trying it rather than full-sending non-dand shamp.

I get on my soapbox about this every few years because this is a genuine educational problem that is probably making some men out there less secure about their hair, and that can feel bad. Condition separately. The difference will be IMMEDIATELY apparent.

I can't stress this enough and men gotta know this. Women already know, but us men need a firm sit-down about it sometimes: 2-in-1 shampoo + conditioner does not exist. They are lying to you. It makes you BASICALLY clean enough but it does not actually condition appropriately.

The name is now officially set in stone (as much as anything is) and it's been easier to talk about the entire rest of the game because of it. That's worth way more than the opportunity cost of potentially finding a 5% better name months down the road.

I had this recently with the game I'm working on (small indie). I wanted the main character's name to be open to discussion so we could keep thinking of ideas, but ultimately I found that I was just willfully slowing things down because we soft-settled on a name a while back & I wouldn't sign off.

The more years that I do it, the more certain I am that game development is just looking up keywords on google. I would say 90% that and 10% idea-having, but I don't even know if I believe in idea-having anymore. You look up the words to use and then you're directed by the words.

This is my go-to controller for most 2D games on PC. Modern major controllers' shared big weakness is good D-Pads and this has an incredibly good one. $25 is the best deal you could get on it.

I'd say that I close open doors to mark progress almost just as often as I open closed ones, tbh, but there is truth to the Multiple Purposes For Doors hypothesis.

(for the record, if "on" means "doing its job," the fastest way to test what job something is doing is to remove it and see what stops happening. Remove the door and you can still go through, but you can no longer be blocked. Therefore, closed is "on" for doors.)

I think something that gets lost when talking about games industry stuff and monoliths like GTA6 is that that's not "talking about game development." This is Talking About Game Development. It's more fun, actually tries to get at what it is to make stuff, divides people instantly, breeds hate, etc.

I just had a programming question that I looked up and only found one person actually asking it in a way that is relevant to my work. It only had one answer, which was from another person saying that you should "just use copilot for writing that sort of thing." It's over gang.

the thing about "I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I'm not kidding" is that these games exist and are out there and you have to make the conscious choice to seek them out instead of just expecting the big companies to deliver this

I said the character name and movie name and the images are all the correct guy, and then the AI comes in and says "yeah, Tom. From Tom & Jerry. Can't fool me. You think I don't know Tom & Jerry?"
A google search for "Tom Interstellar," where the image results are all the character Tom from the movie Interstellar, but then the AI overview takes a wild swing and firmly assumes I mean Tom from Tom & Jerry.

The greatest video game of all time is Outer Wilds, obviously. No contest. Boring information. But it's not the Citizen Kane of games. It's maybe the Everything Everywhere All At Once of games. I don't know. You didn't pay for this opinion and its quality reflects that.

Mitchell F. Wolfe @wolfefm.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I don't know how to reckon with the conflicting information that: 1. "The Citizen Kane of ___" means the best of that thing 2. I don't necessarily think Super Mario 64 is actually the number one best game ever and 3. Super Mario 64 is the Citizen Kane of videogames but, they are all true.

It might not be bad if we could start a thumbdrive culture around trading physical files, though. Games, music, whatever, all on little thumbdrives to be traded at swapmeets and conventions. And you'll probably only get *some* ransomware. Like an allowable amount of virus.

Video games are losing ground in the physical market and, frankly, that's been on its way ever since disk drives stopped being standard in home PCs. But I'm going to be pretty sad if that's the last straw for movies on physical media too. They are coming from the same blu-ray disc factories, mostly.

Indie studios and solo devs are constantly talking about how impossible it is for them in this climate, they also need investment, they also need the industry generally to be healthy. So this "who cares about AAA anyway?" crap I keep seeing is as clueless as it is crass.

Mitchell F. Wolfe @wolfefm.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
You are confusing industry-level revenue with company-level profit. Generally, a game needs to make $(number of people on the team) x (number of years it was in development) x ~150,000 in order to be profitable. The important thing to track is how many games are satisfying that cost.
000
Mitchell F. Wolfe @wolfefm.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
Yes, if only a few of them are the big contributors to that revenue, all of those other indie developers are not making much money, which does eventually force them in large numbers out of the industry.
000
Mitchell F. Wolfe @wolfefm.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
Assuming this is being argued in good faith, no there are absolutely not 1000s or more profitable indie studios. There are thousands of indie groups putting games out, but they are not at all mostly profitable. As your link shows, the vast majority of indie success is funneled into just a few games.
