Yes, you need a different price index. But that price index is also not PPP.

I'm seeing estimates that Russia spends half of it's budget or 7-10% of its gdp on military. I suspect that in their opaque economy there is still a lot more that effectively flows to military. And then there is willingness to spend lives. That goes a long way - it just prioritized military

Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 13h
Now, you can certainly say that you should use different price index for military, especially because a country like Russia puts such a low value on lives of its soldiers. But nobody is disputing that Russia has a large military

One of the main reasons those differencesin prices arise is exactly because countries that are less productive have lower prices of nontradeables

It makes no sense to multiply gdp in PPP terms by the population. I know that a lot of people and institutions do it, but it still doesn't make any sense. PPP is specifically designed to measure standard of living per person by adjusting for differences in prices of nontradeables, not for aggregates

My reading of the literature on employment effects of minimum wage is that nobody who works on it will ever be unemployed

The issue is not the obsession with identification, it is making identification claims when the assumptions don't hold. This sounds like the case where people don't seriously think about exclusion restriction. They see variation but don't ask where it's coming from

My advice as an economist is to avoid keeping your savings under your mattress for 125 years in stacks of $100 bills. I also advise not to keep bars of gold under your mattress because it's very uncomfortable. You're welcome for these insights

Not sure if there is more than this, and I think it's rooted in its charter as "nonpartisan". I don't think it's an actual constraint on research but it is a constraint on explicit advocacy

Why am I on twitter? Because I'm not going to get all the perspectives here. Another shrug here was Vanderbilt report, which is a big deal but no interest here. Why am I here? I want to see the other side (I can see most of it there still too but not all).

Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Unsurprisingly, it's mostly a shrug here except for a few people who pretend it is ok. I'll add another one in this genre that made my jaw drop.

You have to be an affiliate to submit or it needs to be a chapter in NBER publication. There is no review except that the paper cannot make explicit policy recommendations or you might get an email (or at least used to) from Jim if the language suggests something like this even benignly.

You don't need to. That's not what the highlighted claim is about.

Articulate what you mean, because that's precisely what I call bs on. No idea what reasonable metric would show that
100
Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
This is goal post shifting. You highlighted a specific claim that was not about value added and objected to that throughout. I'm not going to defend value added calculation and have not commented on it at all

How is that changing anything about who is prolific now? You're talking about how to normatively evaluate it or what it could be under some counterfactual, but not about what it currently is
100
Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
No, I'm asking you what evidence you have that would show anything else than the highlighted statement, because it seems pretty evident to me using any metric I can think of, but you perhaps have something else in mind other than "I don't like how the world is"

Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
I assume no overweighting of articles in journals everyone wants to publish in and not citations, but then what?
100
Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
That makes no sense. You may not like the exact way they measure things but you have not even articulated a suggestion how you'd measure anything here that would have a hope of showing something different

Ha, I'd be curious to see how law journals approach would work in economics. Not convinced it works that well for law, but still interesting
000
Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
There is a positive not normative claim there, you can be unhappy about the world as is and I have no objections to that. But I still don't follow what you think is not true about people with top school PhDs (mind you, I don't have one) being most prolific. It looks like a very cheap shot to me

I read it in Polish. Nothing in this article (which is a summary of her live answers to questions from readers) implies that AI writes anything for her, only that she uses it and has thoughts about how it might be used in the future. This thread selectively picks and incompletely translates quotes
1173
Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
But I guess if you are a bluesky scold then even the fact she knows and uses AI and has positive thoughts about its future use deserves death sentence

Wojtek Kopczuk @wwwojtekk.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Also, this one is missing translation of the last part which is "and then she [AI] added '[name of a band]' with this funny misspelling", which is just funny because the name is both misspelled and the band is not from the era she was asking about. bsky.app/profile/call...

It's a summary of her meeting with readers where she was responding to questions and nothing she said implies that AI writes anything instead of her
