Hi Bluesky! 👋 I’m an MSc Marine Conservation graduate from the University of Plymouth, currently gaining hands on experience with the SharkWise Project in South Africa. I’m passionate about shark research, behaviour and conservation, and excited to connect with others in the field! 🦈

Yeah, I touch on a few when I give inclusion seminars. They are generally well received! However, they are choosing to show up to a physical location, if you're doing it online/open to the public can't say I know. I tend to focus on key changes and things people should do given limited time 🤷‍♂️

I'm not saying I agree with 100% of the full interview. Just that I think there are some key points made about science being a cumulative effort by lots of people, grants punish creativity, and a few other nuggets. Take away what you will and disagree with what you will.

I'd love to know how people navigate these power dynamics (senority, people w/ high followers that steal from smaller accounts, and more). Whatever you have seen or experienced and what a solution is or the starting discussion for something that might need a solution but it's complicated #academia

However, some of the more technical published journal articles tend to steal ideas and thoughs due to senority not because of evolving social media (though that's *not* to say it does not happen...it does)

Some of my favorite scicomm people to follow are those that do outreach and still cite where the info comes from. It's the approach I try to take, but admit I am not perfect and it's harder when commuting on a bus to also cite a paper 😅

...original authors and thoughts. There's a lot of credit taken because these social sources do not require citing lit that demonstrates these thoughts and ideas already existed and who has already put in time and effort to make the information public.

One of the items today was about stolen academic work/credit. This one really touches home for me, as well any other items posted, because I've experienced this at 4 different uni's (as student and employee) from PI's to other grad students. It's sad and frustrating

Part of the point is to be able to anonymously share lived experiences. It just so happens that things that should be uncommon are far too common Sometimes the account also shares the positives as well!

There's an account on a different social media called "The PhD Tax" I highly recommend reading and/or following. Way too many of the submissions are things that are toxic and far too common. It's a lot of what PhD's go through behind closed doors. No names, yet too many 'me as well' or likes

On a personal note, I'd like to add that non-cis students and disabled students are rarely even recorded. When people even 'attempt' to record trans/gnc students it is usually done with such inaccuracy that it is not helpful. I have even suggested to 2 papers how to attempt to produce the...

We acept these as norms and stop protecting the schools, the teachers, and the students. We talk about the "leaky pipeline" but ignore that it's working as intended. That minority PhD students make up more of that 40%. That some PI's are 'dismissed' (aka fired) for supporting their students...

To all the new grad students: find your support resources, early! If you're in a union, actually read your contract. (Some limit things like reporting problems to 30 days.) Use these people and resources. With that being said, most uni setups are to protect the uni and not the students.

Find out who you communicate well with, who will support you, and where there is overlapping research interests! Many grad students still feel isolated and alone in grad school. Try to find your people (peers and mentors) and create a community with good people.

Too many students are left to be isolated or without enough resources when things go wrong. You should also get some time, usually your first 2 years (average and program dependant) to officially find and choose a lab. Use that time! Have conversations. Discuss science!

Why do we need more examples showing how alive and well these toxic systems are? I can't even imagine how others are coping with some of the news. (PS: This doesn't even begin to cover things, so sorry if others find it inadequate...it is. It's also not aimed at 1 news piece but *everything*)

Why some people need to learn to be mentors instead of thrown in by title alone. Why dismantling the boys clubs remains necessary to allow in underrepresented voices where they are not isolated but equally have colleagues and support around them.

We wonder why depression goes unchecked. Why racism, sexism, and more problems remain than have been fixed. Why dei inclusion efforts are still needed. Why we still need to talk about these things. Why we still need to build better supports for students and ECR and ECFaculty.
