5/7 The Eucatastrophe Tolkien’s word for the sudden turn from disaster to joy when all seems lost and the impossible happens. He saw this as storytelling's deepest truth. My book is full of them—genuine hopelessness followed by a turn that feels surprising yet inevitable.

3/7 The Tom Bombadil Connection My equivalent is God—an old man in a Hawaiian shirt. Both are ancient, whimsical, peripheral figures with cryptic rules. Incorruptible and brief, they are simultaneously the most powerful in their universe and the least interested in proving it.

2/7 The Sam Gamgee Connection Sam is so much like Harry—not a glamorous hero, but the loyal, ordinary person who matters most. He isn’t the most powerful or skilled, but he’s the one who refuses to abandon anyone and keeps going when everything is terrible.
