Sam's tastes in pornography… were kind of boring, River found. Obnoxious ads for beer featuring women with their asses out. Tall, skinny, women. Only about halfway through did they find anything remotely titillating, and it was all so manufactured. Many of the people in this magazine had probably changed drastically now that the world had ended and reshaped itself.

When she— they— she, Sybil, had been younger, she'd enjoyed being pretty, and normal, and human. It was a little fake, but in a different way. Fuzzy memories recounted themselves, skipping back and forth, going back again and again and again to the same man she always thought about until River got fed up and flipped to another page.

More nude models posing inoffensively, airbrushed until they were nothing but smooth skin and a rack. Opinion pieces about nothing that mattered, especially not now. There were a few cartoons that they found a little more endearing, but then it was back to nothing interesting.

…Surely this wasn't the kind of thing Sam was actually into? Was he that bland? Did this seriously get him going? It was just… uncomfortable, wasn't it? The world wasn't like this anymore. It wasn't full of normal, beautiful people, so trying to imagine them as some kind of ideal felt ridiculous. The world was full of weirdos and freaks and River liked it that way because they would never be allowed to know what "normal" felt like anyways.

"Normal" was solely reserved for the last vestiges of the Sybil-in-River, who still lived woefully unaware of everything that was different, who still complained about the TV not playing her favorite shows, who hated that they were, now, pitiful and disgusting in form.

It would have been pretty cathartic to just rip the whole thing into pieces, but it still belonged to Sam, even if he almost definitely didn't want it back now. The other option was probably just to trade it for something that didn't completely suck.

threw this together really quick in like half an hour sorry not explicit but it is like 650 words of jasper getting really unhinged about sybil having a migraine. in true jasper fashion

Sybil was enrapturing at the best of times. She had a toothy smile, yellowed from years of tea-drinking, and big, wide eyes that saw everything, and that occasionally took in absolutely nothing, distractable as she was. Her mood could swing unpredictably, and her memory faltered more often than not, but she was never cruel, and never dishonest. Jasper found her pretty when they were young, and beautiful now, where age had deepened her understanding of the world and slowed her down somewhat.

He also, with some hesitance, had to admit: even in sickness, and even in pain, Sybil was quite charming. She lay on the couch, teary-eyed, a hand dangling off the side and wiggling at nothing in particular. Strands of damp hair clung to her face, covering furrowed brows and a worrying lip. If there was anything powerful enough to incapacitate someone like Sybil, it was the ever-dreadful perimenopausal migraine, and she lay in its throes, shirt riding up to expose the stretch marks striping her stomach and disappearing beneath the waist of her shorts.

Jasper had already wrung the loose water from the washcloth in his hands, but he still feared hed grip the damned thing tight enough to get the carpet wet. Maybe her condition justified his desire to spend every waking moment hovering over her, he thought. Or maybe he was just sick himself, sick by manner of spirit, standing here as if he could drink up Sybil's malaise like wine.

He tried to will the thought away but something still stirred in him when he knelt down, brushing greasy curls away from her forehead to replace the cloth. She mumbled something in appreciation, followed by a soft groan. She was too tired for the theatrics that often accompanied mild upset or illness: this was Sybil as genuine and unfiltered as she came, and his stomach tightened with want.

He didnt know what he wanted. He wanted to keep looking at her, tired and in pain, taking her visage in, but it felt sickening to allow the thought to stay with him.

He didn't know what kind of person took comfort, or even pleasure, in another's uneasiness.

He stepped back, and Sybil raised her hand to adjust the cloth, one eye peeking open.

"Jas," she said, as if he wasn't already at her beck and call. "Can you sit here with me? Just, y'know, can I put my feet in your lap?"

She sounded pitiful. Wordlessly, he carefully took hold of her legs, condensation still stuck to his palms, and sat down, settling her lower body across his thighs.

She made a soft noise of thanks. He did not remove his hand from her lower calf, and felt the muscle clench and relax under his gentle touch. He should have. He should have pulled away. The desire to– to move her, uncouthly, crossed his mind and dizzied him. He wanted to take her and hold her and pull her towards him so harshly that he could hear it in her sharp inhale when the pain spiked.

He felt like a bottomless pit of want, which was not an unfamiliar feeling, but he despised the way it reared its ugly head when she was far from her best, when she was forced to slow down enough so that Jasper had a chance of catching her. He wanted tslow down, to stop, to flinch, to double over by his own doing so that she could not

Jasper pressed his lips together. Sybil continued.

"D'you remember that shitty reality TV show they premiered a few years ago? The one they cancelled 'cause it turned out the hosts were fucking and one of them got pregnant? Do you think they put that On Demand?"
