I'm grateful to James Colton for writing our the Thibault basics in a comprehensive way because the man himself was too busy drawing circles.
An excerpt from James Colton's website jamescolton.com talking about blade length under Thibault's fencing system.

The Sword

Thibault’s preferred sword is a rapier with a two-port-cross hilt. Yours should be sized according to your own body measurements:

Blade Length
From the quillons to the point, the height of your navel when you’re standing upright (this works out to roughly your height × 0.6)
Quillon Length
From one end to the other, the blade length × 0.207
Handle Length
Including the pommel, the blade length × 0.146 (one-third of that is the pommel)
Ricasso Length
The part of the blade that is enveloped by the guard, the blade length × 0.073

For me (6′1″ tall) this results in (rounded to the nearest inch):

    Blade: 44″
    Quillons: 9″
    Handle: 6″ (including a 2″ pommel)
    Ricasso: 3″

The blade length is particularly important, and Thibault gives several reasons for his chosen measurement:

It is the maximum length that you can comfortably draw from a scabbard worn at your hip
It is the maximum length with which you can threaten the opponent in close quarters by withdrawing your arm
If you place the point on the ground, it is the perfect height for resting your body by leaning your elbow on the quillons

The pinnacle of these are at places like Top's or Tommy's, but for me specifically the best place is the Hat, where I tend to skip the burger and get a pastrami dip instead. But knowing the chili burger is there is a deep comfort. And these spicy little fuckers too. They're required.

Absolutely an all-timer for me personally.
tumblr post by hollowtones on july 20, 2015 that reads,

"basically, i think the general rule of thumb is: if someone REALLY wants the blood that’s inside of your body, and they’re like… a vampire, or a dracula, or some sort of mansquito, then that’s probably okay. a dracula and a mansquito are made for removing things like blood and swords from inside your body. that’s basically fine.

if something wants to get at your blood, and they’re, say, some kind of murdersaurus, or maybe a really big frog, that’s where the problems start to arise. a really frog is not made for removing blood, and your blood knows this, which is why it is so vehement about wanting to stay IN your body instead of coming out.

unfortunately this will not deter a really big frog, because a really big frog is full of things like prizes, and value, and quite a lot of hatred, and it would REALLY rather like to replace any and all of those things with your blood, and basically by any means possible."

I'd be happy to share any insights I have. For my part I've been remixing this design from Openswords, in an effort to make something small and Messer-like, and maybe figure out a Thibault-style guard. www.printables.com/model/123812...
A 3/4 inch dowel with an orange crossguard tension fit onto it. The guard is relatively short, with a single large side ring meant to emulate certain langes Messers. The side ring replaces the more traditional Nagel, being somewhat more protective and safer to apply pressure against.

A super premium case out of aluminum can help, as can building a mount for your board into the arms of your desk chair, but that's more than I ever wanted to do. Instead I focused in my preferred stagger and angle. -4° front to back, 20° from center line for each half, small enough to 3d print.

Yeah this sounds about right. No one is expected to know everything, or be good at everything. But man I'm bad at so many things I love and I'd hate trying to turn the things I love into money.
But a desire to make art for the sake of art has become a foreign concept. Obviously in 2024 and beyond, the point of making things is solely to become rich and famous; and the point of being rich and famous is the be richer and more famous. This country has a fatal case of winner psychosis. It has no idea it's even sick.
