Crafting in a "this is fun" way and not a "people shouldn't have rights" way

The feline familiars must recharge in the sun. Not pictured: the blue jay that Nyxie (left) will definitely devour one day (he won't, as a lifelong indoor baby)
Two cats sit in front of an open window. Sunlight is pouring in and catching on a series of glass bottles on a table in front of the window. A smaller black cat on the left stares out intently. The second cat is hunched over and looking into the room with a scowl. The image has an overall witchy and whimsical vibe.

Tysm! I really liked the pattern. The directions are clear and the pieces go together nicely. My only gripe is that the pattern doesn't have color labels, so I was going back and forth between the color map and piece map a lot. But the artist also suggests coloring them yourself as another option.

Isn't he the cutest? I've called myself a book dragon for a while so the pattern is perfect. I think I'm going to attempt a spooky colorway for a Halloween dragon next.

Thank you! I actually didn't pick the other fabrics until after the zipper. I'm definitely a design as you go kind of crafter rather than having a whole plan from the beginning :) I'm in love with all the purple

My book dragon has reached her final form: an oversized tote bag! I think the scale got away from me a little bit more than initially intended, but that's alright. Just means more room for book hoards! 🧶💙📚 #craftsky #quilting #booksky
A quilted purple tote bag hangs off the shoulder of a sewing mannequin. The front of the tote bag features a patchwork dragon sitting on a pile of books.

Thank you so much!

I had to get a little crafty with cutting to keep the scale small. The second lightest teal has big Star Wars X wings and R2-D2 all over that I had to carefully cut around to make it work. Lavender seems to be the consensus!

I usually do too. I do the trick of turning your camera to grayscale to show the value more clearly and that helps a lot. But most of my color picking success is pure luck.

If I could find a way to make five zippered pockets work in the design of a bag, I'd probably do it. I love pockets!

Thank you! Its foundation paper pieced so it looks way more difficult than it actually is, but I shed tears over the eye ball so 😅 I think you're right, though. I definitely want the dragon to be the main star, so the zipper should fade into the background a little.

I swear sometimes the hardest part of sewing and quilting is picking accessories and hardware. What zipper color goes best: lavender, light blue, yellow, green, or purple? 🧶💙📚 #bookdragon #bookwyrm #craftsky

Reading somehow feels more productive if I can turn it into a colorful list and chart spread in a journal #booksky 📚
A journal is open on a blue patterned rug with various pens and highlighters arranged around. On one page is a list of books with star ratings below. The opposite page has a calendar with colored lines indicating when a book was read.

I need to take updated photos because she is flourishing. My friend says the jewelry makes her grow better and I'm not a scientist so I can't argue 😅

Today I finished my crochet Jane Austen that's been in the works for over a year (🫣) Maybe now I should actually read the very pretty book she goes with 🧶💙📚
A crochet doll in a blue dress with brown hair in a bun. It is a very simplified likeness of Jane Austen. The doll is holding a dark green crochet book. It is posed next to a thick, classic bound copy of The Complete Novels of Jane Austen on a shelf of other classic books.

Thank you! She's my first surviving houseplant so I may be biased, but I think she's the best little plant ever.

I recently learned about plant jewelry, so I spent all of yesterday putting stars and pretty things on my lemon meringue pothos (her name is Calliope, because why not have a Greek muse pie plant?)
A pathos plant in front of a sunny window. There are iridescent star charms hung from chains on different branches of the plant. A full bookshelf can be seen in the background. A pathos plant in front of a window. There are iridescent star charms hung from chains on different branches of the plant.

One of my kids used the phrase "Christian mythology" this morning (courtesy of me treating the stories of the Bible like the Greek pantheon). I don't know how that's going to shake out in today's political climate, but life is an experiment and I'm excited to see.

I need to better about them. Skills improve so slowly, it's hard to notice in the moment. But put things together almost a decade apart (😵) and the improvement is wild.

I'm a measurement girly, because counting is hard 😅 my next pair of socks is going to be my first taat because I'm chronic with second sock syndrome.

I was -this- close to chucking them out in a fit of frustration so many times. It's like a slouchy 80s legwarmer masquerading as a sock 😅 But now that I've finally gotten good at socks, I'm glad I kept the silly things.

My first hand knit sock circa 2016 and my most recent sock, side by side. I love keeping the firsts of things even when they fit poorly so I can see how my knitting skills improve. I've also finally gotten over my fear of using "fancy" yarn! Yay progress! 🧶
Two hand knit socks. The one on the left is larger, more shapeless, and has evidence of wear through fuzziness. The one on the right is made with a finer yarn, has tighter stitches, and more shaping.

Can embroidery machines make patches? They could probably be added to hats more easily than direct embroidery.

I'm in love with the monthly summary spreads from @thestorygraph.com. They make me feel like a proper BookSky girly more than my little journal spreads
An info graphic of book stats. Of primary importance: 6 books read, 1459 pages, 13.2 hours, and an average rating of 4.25. The covers for Pandora's Jar by Natalie Haynes, Galatea by Madeline Miller, and All System Red by Martha Wells are featured.

Ooh, I'll look into them! I usually use bamboo because plastic squeaks and metal clicks too much. I'm really finicky about my knitting sensory experience.
010
Sparrow @withlovesparrow.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
After I finish these I'm definitely switching to cables because the stress flex of bamboo is also anxiety inducing 😅 I've never tried carbon, are they noisy?

Sparrow @withlovesparrow.bsky.social · 31/01/2025
I always count when I finish, but I also track how much time I spend daily with a book on a graph in a journal. I put more stock in my graphs than my book count.

Knitting socks with bamboo DPNs is great for anxiety. If I let the tension in my chest reach my hands, I'll snap a needle. So the whole thing turns into forced relaxation. And you can take breaks to pet the yarn 🧶
A work in progress photo of a sock. The sock is three fourths of the way done and the toe is on three thin bamboo needles. The tail of the yarn leads to a slightly squished round cake of yarn.

I know of a few mosaic artists that smash up thrift store pottery and flatware for materials. Maybe there's someone local who'd pick up a bag to save it from the trash?

When I was in 4th grade, my art teacher did a unit on weaving and brought in all sorts of yarn for us. There was one skein that looked like yours and we called it unicorn yarn and the teacher had to ration it out before we came to fists for it. Yours is so pretty even rationing wouldn't be enough.

I'm new to this hobby, but knitting Gundam is a totally normal and acceptable pose for battle robots, right? Everyone likes to be cozy. 🧶🤖💙📚

I really enjoyed the first book in the Secrets of the Nile duology, but the second book fell a little flat in comparison for me. I haven't read the other series though.

I've been working on sashiko mending holes in my husband's and son's pants. They're both so hard on knees but the patches are so pretty. Also upcycling sweatshirts my daughter has outgrown but is too emotionally attached to for donation.

I think certain brains are made more for one craft than the other, sort of like math people vs. art people. I tried to learn knitting for years and failed every time. But crochet came to me super naturally. Now, I can do both through sheer stubbornness, but crochet is still easier for me.

Lazy Sunday means doing some visible mending (yet another) hole in my son's clothing. I used a scrap from an upcycled sweater as the patch so it feels very "waste not, want not." Sashiko sewing is my favorite. 🧶

I heard snoring while working and found these two cuddly furry babies behind me (Peep the blanket I crocheted for the books I read in 2023, still love how it turned out)
Two cats are sitting in a yellow chair on top of a striped crochet blanket. The left cat has its back turned and is asleep while the right cat looks off in the distance.
