My brother, nine years older, had a giant poster of a great white, with its gaping maw in the foreground, on the wall of the bedroom we shared when I was 4-5 and he was 13-14. Jaws is one of my favorite movies but I still remember that poster and the flesh (imagined) in the teeth of that shark.

I had the same experience with my first new car. I also refused all the add-ons (including anti-salt undercoating—I bought it in Oregon and was about to move to L.A.). As the finance guy walked out of the room to get the papers he’d printed I heard him mutter: “I hate first time buyers.”
