A couple of large drone panoramas (11 and 14 images, respectively) of, firstly, an old part of the Mona Mine at Mynydd Parys, including long stone sublimation kilns and, secondly, a series of later electrochemical precipitation ponds. Both sites are protected by law. #photography #heritage

Capel Cwmorthin, north Wales. It's already in a more ruined state than when this photo was taken in 2024. #photography #monochrome #trees #heritage #cymru #wales

Now fully-complete reassessment of Treforys, a mid-19th century slate quarry workers' village in north Wales. Free to read, no ads: drive.google.com/file/d/1wnTo... #heritage #history #cymru #wales

How a misquoted and misapplied set of words negatively coloured our view of a mid-19th century north Wales planned slate village, infecting the official records in the process. drive.google.com/file/d/1wnTo... #heritage #history #cymru #wales

Three new wildfires in Wales today. The drought is not over. Not by a long way. #drought #wildfires #climatecrisis

All very interesting. This is the book I am reading. Well worth getting; available for roughly £13 used on E-bay, or £34 new.

Astonishing satellite images today and how obviously dry most of England is. The ground is clearly scorched across the country, with Wales remaining relatively green, even though it, too, has seen anything from only 3% to 8% of the expected rainfall in the past month. #climate #drought

A lovely cameo appearance in a 1276 letter from Edward I's court where, like a wave that passes, only to fade again forever, we learn about Gruffudd, son of a man known as 'Budr i Hossan' (Welsh: 'Dirty his Hose'). #history #medieval #wales #cymru
Reconstruction garments of the 13th century, showing the hose ('hossan' in Welsh) which Budr i Hossan seems not to have kept very clean!

The mighty Castell Caernarfon, which started rising in 1283. One of the finest European castles, it took inspiration from Constantinople, evident in the coloured bands running along the outer wall. #history #photography #castle #medieval

Heat often lets me see the Mournes...from Anglesey, thanks to Fata Morgana superrefraction and its magical inverted images.

Noctilucent clouds made a reasonably strong show again early this morning, here at 02:35UT, as seen from Anglesey. #science #atmosphere #weather #clouds #cymru #wales
Noctilucent ('night shining') clouds, which occur in the mesopause region, some 82km in altitude and which, as a result, remain sunlit during summer twilight hours. Turbulence and gravity wave structure is evident as sunrise approaches.

I'm always amazed at how the word 'dawn' is used. I don't consider it's correctly used when the sun is already significantly above the horizon. This graphic is the most sensible definition, being based on night turning into day by various degrees.

Well done, @LBC for using the correct Welsh 'Conwy', and not the anglicised 'Conway' used by most other outlets. It matters.

'Drone' warfare is older than you might think. In 1267, the Sheriff of Essex claimed, as a confidence trick, that 40 male chickens were to be used to carry incendiaries, tied to their feet, as part of efforts to quell a popular uprising in London. Not carried out in practice, but the idea was there!

A decent noctilucent cloud display at 02:00UT this (July 08) morning. As seen from Anglesey. Apparent elevation 35 degrees, spanning about 130 degrees in azimuth. Brightness of 4 (of 5). About a month of the season left now. #nlc #noctilucent #cloud #science #photography
