I just want to know if it hooks them. If they don't enjoy it, if they can put it down and walk away, if they forget about it until I remind them. I ask a few follow up questions. I have critique partners for the "what would make it better" questions.

Such a great question. My betas primarily read for enjoyment. Do they have questions? Did they get stuck anywhere? Did they like it? The critique partners look for ways to make it better.

Sometimes you think you have a great title for your book and sometimes, after using this title for a long time in conversation, you realize (through a quick online search) that you chose the same title as the name of an RPG. I don't write RPG books. Back to the drawing board.

Hmmmm. Maybe. I ended up changing the end of that one today during a line edit pass. I think it added another layer of danger and urgency. It gave them more of a reason to move on than what I originally wrote. But the chapter on the whole was more eye opening for the MC.

Yes. I don't have major restructuring happening because I lay it out ahead of time but I did add a scene I thought would be a chapter and a chapter that I thought would be a scene. I have divided chapters to create new chapters so it could breathe a bit better. All those changes really helped.

The second book came to me in a fever dream so I jotted it all down before I forgot it. I saved it. It's living for tomorrow at this point. I haven't looked at it in months honestly. So I guess it's a roadmap for that book when I get there, subject to changed based on where book 1 takes me.

I write as much as I can until I need an outline and then I do one. And then I write. And then I revise. Somewhere in the morning mist and sometimes in the evening I get ideas. I percolate them for a while and get them in. One scene is turning out differently than I had planned and for the better. 🤪

Honestly, this will sound totally hokey but they both just came to me when I wasn't paying attention. I sat down and wrote a folk resistence song to go in one of them. And the other? I guess I just realized I mentioned something twice, opened it as a mystery and never gave the MC any closure. 🤷‍♀️

Like you, I write the bones first. I do have two scenes I want to add but had been looking for the right place. I found one last week and today, I found the other. These scenes will expand the world and the understanding of things happening in the plot. Everything else will be texture and color.

I am so glad you did! I read The Count of Monte Cristo- unabridged- years ago and it was a delicious read. Totally worth the wait. I just keep hearing that readers are binging books and trying to impress others with how many books they've read and shorter books allow them to read more.
