Australia's under-16 social media ban isn't working as multiple studies now find most underage users still have accounts. My post on the uncomfortable reality for Canada's Bill C-34: the better the privacy protection, the less effective the ban.

The Data on Australia's Social Media Ban: The Better the Privacy Protection, The Less Effective the Ban - Michael Geist
As regular readers know, the Canadian plan to establish a social media ban for under 16s in Bill C-34 is based largely on the Australian model that took effect last December. With more data on the…

Great article from @emilymbender.bsky.social It's so easy to overlook that language shapes how we think and feel about a subject, so we need vocabulary that helps us remember that AI isn't human. 🤖 buttondown.com/maiht3k/arch...

The "chain of custody of why" is a load-bearing element of science. In numerical solutions of PDE (as in fluid and structural mechanics), the modern practice of verification (solving the equations right) and validation (solving the right equations) as distinct emerged from painful epistemic flailing
The old way will be wrong sometimes. But you will know why you are wrong when the data start coming back, and you will be able to adjust because you have your chain of custody of why. With an LLM, there is only the one step. If you can’t examine the “why?” at every step of the chain, you can’t determine if your hypothesis is realistic and worth spending large amounts of money to check out, and you can’t tell if you would be better served by hosting a giant bonfire party using your investors’ cash as fuel. And that situation makes me nervous. Nervous enough not to use an LLM.

I like the sound of "synthetic text extruding machines". One of my favourite things is to describe technologies in such literal terms that it starts sounding ridiculous to do small things like, uh, bet the entire world economy on them.

The people who have been selling LLM as a revolution knew what they were doing when they made chatbots the primary means of interfacing with the tech. It makes people feel like they're gaining something.

Carney seems to forget that there are a significant number of people in Canada employed (or formerly employed as my case) in the tech sector. You know other populations who also don’t like genAI? Folks well educated about tech security, privacy, safety, and even copyright/data sovereignty.

The federal government dismissed privacy advocates' concerns as being "tinfoil hat"—that rhetoric is short-sighted.

"Everyone knows chatbots are terrible search engines, though!" They really don't.

Brands already know this, which is why there's a growing industry of AI-engine optimization (AEO), which is designed specifically to manipulate LLMs and AI search. Over the last few weeks I have heard from a bunch of people in this industry. Already a big industry / common practice to do this

I recently heard someone talk about how this would be showing up in the future, as if it wasn't already happening.

I'm not a bot. I just needed to do research and my Tumblr account isn't super useful for that for some reason.
