It absolutely sucks to find out that this really cool tool which seems to help is actually doing harm. I've been there, it's one of the reasons I'm so vehemently against it (backlash factor). I've seen artists who use AI to graph out positions, layouts, etc... but they never post it, yaknow?

But back to the topic, the bad impression is why @ckohwrites.bsky.social tries to reach out (gently) to people. Your social media is your brand as a writer. You want to have a good relationship with other authors & artists - these are the people you'll end up meeting at conventions, etc.

Pricing of art is a whole 'nother thing. Some art is just a few sketches ($25 each!) and some takes months ($$$$). Plus using it for commercial stuff does automatically add $$$ cuz the artist loses promotion rights. @ckohwrites.bsky.social found a good commission site, vgen.co

You see where I got the impression, though, right? The public promotion of AI art is what made me think you didn't care. That's why for a lot of the community the first response is block or mute - and 90% of people who use AI publicly are not open to change. In fact, they're often bots. (argh bots)

Hopefully what you're already doing will work. I was told no ID is easier, but with ID is still possible. Don't be afraid to call people and ask for help, you will find someone friendly eventually. The post office and librarian passport people were helpful to me. Local law library especially.

From experience: If you don't have a driver's license, yes. If you do have a DL or other state forms of ID: maybe not. Call your local law office. Mine was super helpful. Feel free to DM, I'll be happy to share my experience and maybe links/emails to people who might be relevant if you're in TX.

I tried to explain this to my wife and here's what I came up with. Did I get it right? Did I miss anything? Tagging @ckohwrites.bsky.social to follow replies in case I got it wrong. (Also, thank you for posting stuff like this, it's freaking important.)

Explanation:

1. The monster they're talking about there is from a deeply religious story with huge significance to the indigenous people of this land. They're so evil that even talking about them is asking for Bad Shit To Happen.

2. This "editor"/"anthropologist" person is arguing that indigenous people will write about them and thus she has to accept them if she doesn't want to shut out indigenous authors.

3. The poster is pulling out their hair because NO INDIGENOUS PERSON WOULD SUBMIT A STORY LIKE THAT. It would be like you writing a poem propositioning a demon to hot nasty sex in entirely religious terms that actually invite the demon to possess you. It just... can't be done safely.

4. The lady just isn't getting it, and is offended to have been called out about it. Plus, she's decided that "because natives came up with it" means it's "folklore" not "religion" and that makes it OK to steal.
