also, while modern sashiko is mostly decorative, back then it was purely utilitarian. it made strong, thick, warm fabric without having to cough up money you didn't have for the same. it was also historically done very quickly, because working rural families did not have time for "slow stitching".

oh my lord. y'all. sashiko embroidery was NOT said to "prevent evil spirits from entering the body". ffs. it was created by dirt poor but clever Edo era rural folks & peasants so they could get more wear and warmth out of their clothes. that's literally it. enough with the mystical BS 🙄

It's actually kinda not! I mean, it's def not ROUGH, but it has a kinda...strength, I guess? to it. Which is why it's such a workhorse of a fabric. :D There's a super-soft version of cotton yarn called "milk cotton" which has milk enzymes (NO, GASP) in it that's actually as soft as it looks, though!
