So idk who else you can ask DFAT to turn to for interpreting - and shouldn’t it be even more shocking that Australia, which has the leading translation and interpreting sector across the world, only has 4 AIIC Mandarin-English interpreters? What’s wrong with skill migration and Asia literacy lol

On The Oz’s take on PM’s interpreter: here’s an interesting fact I learned when studying interpreting There’re only FOUR conference interpreter for Mandarin and English accredited by AIIC (the global top accreditation body, super hard to get into it) and probs 3 of them aren’t Australian

I have worked with good editors who paid immediately after the editing process, publishing the piece two months later, which I’m completely fine. But this year I also have a piece that’s now I have no hope it’d be published or paid, as the editor told me every Monday “I would check” and never did it

This is a new editor I work with and now I really really regret giving this piece to them, when another outlet told me they’d be interested but I ditched it (because I felt they’d would be very slow to pay me). I’m not rich!!! I can’t just wait for two months for you to prioritise your in house work

I’ve been freelancing for two years and I have never been so frustrated with this recent work. I pitched in May and the editor didn’t check my draft until the end of June, and then I rewrote the piece for for god’s sake, tomorrow is August and they still haven’t responded to me.

Wing Kuang @wingkuang.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Dear editors, our time as freelancers is equally important as yours and your in-house. If you aren’t giving double pay, then either edit my story and pay me (and you can schedule it whenever you want), or tell me directly that you aren’t taking it so that I can sell it somewhere.

Please please please report this story just like how you will do with Robodebt; with disaster recovery; with your typical approach to government negligence. Otherwise you are doing what chinesr state media is doing right now: phrasing it as a culture war btw HK and China.
0151
Wing Kuang @wingkuang.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
The whole China-HK distinction is just part of the implication of the event, but that’s NOT what people are concerning. They are questioning about if there’s negligence. Get the facts right before you publish analysis to suggest there’s a culture war.

Because it explains why so many chinese mainlanders, esp those who observed/took part in White Paper protests in 2022, are triggered by this incident, because White Paper also started with a fire in Urumqi where gov locked up the building for Covid-zero.

Wing Kuang @wingkuang.bsky.social · 30/11/2025
I’ve been monitoring online discussions from Hong Kong about why HKers consider blaming bamboo scaffolding is a gov spin, and I think many AUS media have got it WRONG. They think it’s a spin NOT because they see bamboo scaffolding as a tradition that distinguishes HK from China.
