Yesterday we managed to count a combined 239.735 birds! This was the SECOND BIGGEST DAY EVER in BRC history! We also broke our day- and season total for Black Kites, our day-record for Large eagles, Greater Spotted and even for Steppe Eagles!

Twenty Years of Monitoring the European Roller Coracias garrulus in Portugal: Population Trends, Breeding Ecology and Conservation Implications
Las aves esteparias se encuentran entre los grupos de vertebrados terrestres más amenazados de Europa, por lo que disponer de datos sólidos sobre la evolución de sus poblaciones y sus rasgos de historia de vida es fundamental para una conservación eficaz. Sin embargo, esta información sigue siendo escasa para la mayoría de las especies debido a la falta de programas de seguimiento a largo plazo. Este estudio ofrece una evaluación exhaustiva de la población reproductora de la carraca europea Coracias garrulus en Portugal, basada en más de dos décadas de seguimiento de nidos (aprox. 650 intentos de cría), datos de captura-recaptura de más de 1500 individuos anillados y censos nacionales. Evaluamos las tendencias en el tamaño y la distribución de la población, el éxito reproductor, la idoneidad del tipo de nido, la dispersión y la fidelidad al sitio, así como las tasas de supervivencia. La población portuguesa se estima en 72-82 parejas reproductoras. Informamos de un aumento de la población del 26% desde 2009, lo que contrasta con una marcada contracción (–67%) del área de cría desde principios de la década de 2000. Esta aparente paradoja refleja un crecimiento poblacional sostenido dentro de la Zona de Protección Especial (ZPE) de Castro Verde, que actualmente alberga el 96% de la población nacional y que probablemente se deba a la provisión continua de sitios de nidificación artificiales y al aumento de la productividad reproductora. La dispersión natal fue, en promedio, de 9.7 km, superando significativamente la dispersión reproductora (2.5 km), lo que concuerda con una fuerte fidelidad al sitio (81%). Los machos mostraron mayor fidelidad al sitio que las hembras, y la fidelidad anual al sitio se asoció positivamente con el éxito reproductor previo. La supervivencia de adultos y juveniles se estimó en 0.64 ± 0.02 y 0.22 ± 0.05, respectivamente. En conjunto, la población portuguesa de carraca sigue siendo pequeña, espacialmente restringida y fuertemente dependiente de nidos artificiales (81% de las parejas reproductoras) y de una elevada producción reproductora. La limitada capacidad de dispersión sugiere que la colonización de nuevas áreas requiere promover la conectividad del hábitat para facilitar la expansión del área de distribución desde su bastión actual. El seguimiento continuado a largo plazo es esencial para detectar cambios demográficos, orientar la gestión adaptativa y fundamentar estrategias de conservación basadas en la evidencia para esta emblemática especie esteparia.—Fialho, N., Catry, I., Gameiro, J. y Catry, T. A protected bird was deliberately killed. The cruelty caught on camera is difficult to watch. Yesterday, at Ħal Farruġ, a hunter was filmed killing a Kestrel, a protected species. The footage shows the kestrel being held under the hunter’s foot until it takes its last breath. youtu.be/NW7JqWHcnqA
