This is more than just finding a route that bypasses groups opposed to pipelines on their land. There is no path that doesn't put sensitive ecosystems & habitats at risk. There is no path that doesn't contribute to the climate crisis. There is no path that is acceptable. #NoNewPipelines #canpoli

What nonsense. 1) She knows the law better than a judge? When did she get that degree? 2) There is already an approved question addressing whether Alberta should stay in Canada. Those on both sides of the question would have the same opportunity to be heard answering the #ForeverCanadian question.

The text reads: Premier Danielle Smith said the government plans to appeal Leonard's decision.

"We think that today's decision by the court will deny opportunity to well over 300,000 Albertans to have their petition verified by Elections Alberta," Smith said at an unrelated news conference Wednesday afternoon.

"We think that this decision is incorrect in law and anti-democratic, and we will be appealing it as a result.

"Our cabinet and caucus will, of course, be meeting in the next couple of days to discuss the full context and make some decisions after we've had a chance to talk it through."

Data centres are set to proliferate across the country, providing little economic benefit & few jobs, while producing a lot of noise, disrupting communities & wildlife. These centres use massive quantities of land, electricity, & water. It's difficult to overstate the negative impacts on many levels
Image is from https://thelogic.co/news/the-big-read/data-centres-artificial-intelligence-canada-map/

A map of Canada shows green squares in most provinces indicating operational data centres. It also shows many more red squares in several provinces indicating proposed data centres.

The top of the map reads "Where there are people, there are data centres. The vast majority of Canada's existing and proposed data centres are in densely populated areas."The image is from https://thelogic.co/news/the-big-read/data-centres-artificial-intelligence-canada-map/

A map of Canada shows green dots indicating operational data centres, and red ones for proposed ones. They are sized according to their electrical capacity, with most of the largest proposed centres in Alberta.

The top of the map reads "Canada's data-centre-building boom is all about Alberta. Legacy data centres dominate near Toronto and Montreal, with proposed sites in Alberta dwarfing anything ever seen."

Exodus of progressive liberals to NDP? Is @avilewis.ca more open to floor crossers than Davies? Trudeau-era Liberals may feel more in line with the NDP than Carney's LPC. A party tent can only stretch so far. There must be concerns about its structural integrity when extended to house MPs like Gladu

Lessons forgotten too quickly, now being relearned amid dire circumstances.
Image shows a stack of books with a gavel on top on the right. On the left is a quote from the film "The Talk of the Town" (1942) which reads:

"...think of this country and of the law that makes it what it is. Think of a world crying for this very law! And maybe you'll understand why you ought to guard it. Why the law has got to be the personal concern of every citizen. To uphold it for your neighbor as well as yourself. Violence against it is one mistake. Another mistake is for any man to look upon the law as just a set of principles. And just so much language printed on fine, heavy paper. Something he recites and then leans back and takes it for granted that justice is automatically being done. Both kinds of men are equally wrong! The law must be engraved in our hearts and practiced every minute to the letter and spirit. It can't even exist unless we're willing to go down into the dust and blood and fight a battle every day of our lives to preserve it. For our neighbor as well as ourself!"

Indigenous communities know that environmental and economic considerations are not independent factors to be weighed against one another. They are intrinsically linked. In many parts of Canada, such as on our Pacific coast and along our rivers, the environment is the economy. Indigenous traditions teach that we are not apart from nature but are integral to it. I have learned from my experience of Canada's north that we are just one small - and humble - element of an integrated ecosystem. We have to earn our right to take from our environment, while always respecting and nourishing it." pg 496

PP's hyperpartisan letter to Carney before US meeting. If 🇨🇦 wanted you to represent us internationally, we would have elected you PM. Stop trying to undermine PMMC while lying about putting country over party. Let him do the job you are completely unqualified for. #canpoli #cdnpoli #NeverPoilievre
Header of letter reads: Leader of the opposition, October 6, 2025. Addressed to Mark Carney.
Subject: Go to Washington and "negotiate a win" for Canada
Prime Minister,
Conservatives will always put Canada first. We restate our standing offer to help you keep your promise to "negotiate a win" on tarrifs with the U.S.
We only ask that you keep your promise in this meeting with the president. You promised a deal by July 21, 2025. Still no deal. You promised to "negotiate a win" and now US tarrifs om Canada are twice as high as when you were elected saying you would get rid of them. You promised "elbows up" then caved on dollar-for-dollar tarrifs, the Digital Services tax and more while winning nothing in return for Canada.
You promised jobs. Then killed 86,000 of them. You promised the "fastest-growing economy in the G7" and delivered the fastest-shrinking economy in the G7. Canadians suffering in your weak economy have no more time for you to bask in globe-trotting photo ops, handshakes and press conferences.
No more losing. It's time for you to deliver the promised wins:
-get US tarrifs off Canadian softwood lumber as Prime Minister Harper negotiated within 80 days of taking office.
-get US tarrifs off Canadian steel, aluminum, copper and auto tarrifs that have doubled since you took office. Time for your promised win to reverse the damage.
-get rid of all other US tarrifs
We only expect you to keep your promises. If you only return with excuses, broken promises and photo ops, you will have failed our workers, our businesses and our country.

Note: fact-checking recommended Header reads: Leader of the Opposition

I am always happy to help because we all must put Canada ahead of our parties.
Best wishes in Washington, Prime Minister. We are all cheering for a big win for Canada.
Sincerely,
(Signed) Pierre Poilievre

Prime Minister Carney is recognizing the Hamas state in another effort to distract from his record of rampant crime, costs, debt, immigration and job-loss.

As he distracts abroad, Conservatives are working at home. Our priority is to put Canada First: restoring stronger take-home pay, safer streets and secure borders within a self-reliant country. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s priority is creating a Hamas state that will reward terrorists for raping civilians, taking hostages, oppressing Palestinians and launching a war.

Conservatives will always stand for Israel’s right to exist and defend itself, living next to a future demilitarized, terror-free, democratic and peaceful Palestinian State. Conservatives will focus on what is good for Canada because it is time to put our country first for a change.

Shameful. It is important to stand up to violence of any kind. It is deeply harmful to give a standing ovation for a hateful, bigoted, racist, misogynistic, rage mongerer that incited violence against many marginalized groups. They aren't trying to protect free speech. At least, not for everyone.

Will the ballot for this by-election look any different from ballots used in other elections?
Yes. The ballot for the Battle River–Crowfoot by-election will look different from the ones electors and candidates have seen in the past. This is due to a higher than usual number of candidates and limitations of the large ballots that have been used in some previous elections.
Elections Canada has created an adapted ballot that is similar to a special ballot, on which electors write the name of the candidate they are voting for. This adapted ballot will replace the typical list-style ballot, on which electors mark a blank circle next to the name of their candidate of choice. The adapted ballot will retain the safeguards of a typical ballot.
As an exceptional measure, Elections Canada is sharing a sample of the adapted ballot to help improve the accessibility of the voting process.

Populism can only be addressed by engagement.
Thus politicians and the media should address the issues raised by populists but challenge their framing and how best to resolve them.
When leaders design initiatives, thinking of these examples from the periphery can make them most likely to support the common good which has at its heart the interests of the most marginalised: during the financial crisis, the working poor who were most concerned about their savings; during the climate crisis, the young, the unborn and those who live in vulnerable island states; and during the Covid crisis the elderly, the vulnerable and the essential workers who faced the highest personal risks for often meagre wages.A sustainable recovery is not a slogan. It's what the next generation deserves, and it is what we need now. It is job heavy (heavier than conventional 'shovel-ready' building of roads and bridges), capital intensive (at a time when interest rates are low and household spending is subdued) and fair (to all socioeconomic groups, to those in the most affected regions and industries today and to those who will come after). A sustainable recovery favours regeneration over redistribution. A sustainable recovery must be built on solid foundations and the right values. The second challenge is that our economy has thrived by selling goods and services primarily to one customer perched on our doorstep. That has consigned us to a comfortable but lower rung on the innovative ladder that is topped by the United States. Now, the forces of change are creating an opportunity to rebalance our economy to the benefit of all. But it will require far-reaching changes to our most important domestic institutions and to shape the global system. For these to be right, they must build on Canadian values.Solidarity connects companies and their stakeholders: employees, suppliers, customers and communities. Solidarity extends across regions and is international. Ultimately, solidarity is about people: how to help people acquire new skills so that they have varied and fulfilling careers; how to help people transition into new industries; how to ensure economic change benefits everyone from First Nations to new Canadians from coast to coast to coast. To do this, we need to support workers not jobs.

With fake quotes floating around, here are some #RealCarneyQuotes from his book Value(s): Building a Better World for All. Feel free to add your favourite quotes from #PMCarney (book, live, or anywhere) /1 #canpoli #cdnpoli #Canada #CanadaSky #CanadaStrong #MarkCarney #PMMarkCarney #Values
I've always known that Canada is a special place. It educated me, taught me my values and gave me my chance in life. When those chances took me abroad, I was able to see through a new lens the true weight of Canada's place in the world. We are a magnet for talented, ambitious, caring people who share our values. We routinely transcend the limitations of our size to model values and policies for other countries. Growing up I learned from my family, neighbours, friends and our country the values of integrity, responsibility, solidarity and hard work. I gained a deep appreciation for our cultural mosaic, and enjoyed opportunities to engage in my community and serve our country. Like others, I have drawn on Canadian strengths in public education and healthcare, and I have been fortunate to have been raised in an environment where leaders must forge consensus towards a common vision and then take principled, disciplined action.Canadians have long valued fairness in the form of universal public health care, robust public education, tax relief for the middle class and supportive family policies like Quebec's childcare program and the Canada Child Benefit. These measures have encourages more women to enter and stay in the workforce and have supported real median wages growth. This underscores that while major forces are reshaping the world, nations are not powerless. Domestic policy matters. In the end, we don't have to be hostages to fortune or the forces of the global economy. Our efforts to build sustainability must be in partnership with Indigenous people. We must improve further partnerships with Indigenous communities on natural resource projects to empower social and economic development while protecting our environment. One way to advance this goal is by providing the option for more economic benefits-sharing agreements, including equity stakes in projects so that communities can benefit more from the economic upside of development. This is but one aspect of a larger economic reconciliation effort that can include, among other initiatives, support for Indigenous-led businesses and high-quality healthcare. More fundamentally, our approach to sustainability should draw on the wisdom of Indigenous people. We have to earn our right to take from our environment, while always respecting and nourishing it.
Leadership is the acceptance of responsibility rather than an assumption of power. True leadership is not an end in itself but rather a means to accomplishing a worthwhile goal.

Discussion of morality is a good reminder for a leader not to confuse their leadership role with themselves or become addicted to the status and privileges of power. Rather, recognise that all leadership is temporary, that you will be custodians of your institutions and keeper of their flames.

Good leaders combine personal humility, self-knowledge and the ability to learn. That means admitting mistakes, seeking and accepting feedback and sharing the lessons.

Good leadership isn't just effective but ethical. It leads to human flourishing.

Some have asked how to talk to Conservatives about their vote. Here's my thoughts:

If they are Maple MAGA there isn't much to say.

If they are true conservatives, some just want permission not to vote for PP. Give it to them. Tell them they can vote for a pragmatist who believes in fiscal prudence. Tell them they can vote for anyone else this time, to give their party a chance to reset. Tell them that this is their chance to help their party escape the fate of the GOP.

You can be a conservative and vote no to Poilievre.
