Chaka Khan is one of the best examples of an artist who has incredible, universally loved singles AND ALSO an exceptionally deep discography filled with unknown banger after unknown banger.

It's unbelievable how much Miles Davis changed the game so many different times across so many decades. The big band stuff I'm working on right now draws SO MUCH from Birth of the Cool, and that record is like... idk, his 6th most influential album?

There's a track on the new Carly Rae Jepsen album that goes full Splatoon-mode for the chorus, and it kicks so much ass.

For the current Worlds Beyond Number campaign, I've had to figure out how to score scenes that are genuinely scary and exciting using (primarily) a big band / swing palette. I love writing for big band, but "fear" is not an emotion you're likely to associate with that sound!

The new WBN campaign is absolutely incredible. I gotta avoid spilling just how rad it is, but what I WILL say is: 1. The party rapport is electric 2. Lou's ability to set the scene is unmatched 3. I'm scoring the whole show with a gilded age big band This is your cue to tune in!

One of the great challenges of getting people to engage with art is irreducibility. They'll ask what they're supposed to "get" out of a Rothko or Pierrot Lunaire or whatever and take your inability to reply in a pithy summation as an indictment of the art itself. But the art is irreducible!

A primary contributing factor to messy JRPG stories is that the number of playable characters grow beyond what the plot needs. It's a tricky balancing act of offering mechanical variety without juggling more characters than the story can handle.

I've worked in the fantasy cartography space for years now, and this video has reminded me what's so special about imagined landscapes. It's also a great argument in favor of process taking precedence over utility. The "how" is special. The "why" is almost secondary.
