I really love how Windows has maintained backwards compatibility with 90's Mojibake from before the entire world outside of Win32 adopted UTF-8 everywhere. In an era of constant tech stack churn, stuff on Windows rendering text wrong is the one thing you can rely on.

So, we need to support US AI companies. And we need to make kids use AI in school to make sure everybody is using AI. But as soon as it's political ads and AI is effecting a politician, AI coming for *your* job means that's an onslaught and we suddenly need law to keep pace. Rest of us get fucked.

There's a new Gal Gadot movie that just dropped on Amazon Prime. And thus far, they have not let a single review of the movie show up in the stats. Perhaps that's just because people are too busy re- and re-watching it to review it, cuz it's too good.

On some level, it's genuinely impressive to have the hubris/confidence to advertise a game with "expected" awards.

In case you were wondering how retail is doing in Los Angeles, there's a massive new Spirit Halloween on Wilshire in the middle of Miracle Mile. In August.

Of course not. If I wanted to use Gemini, I would just click on it or whatever. The value of this sort of advertising has got to be negative, right? Does anybody respond positively to this sort of thing?

Oh, and after I jokingly described the show as what you would expect if a planned low budget Robin Hood show pivoted to being sci fi in a panic, they actually gave the main character a bow and arrow they had lying around and said he was like Robin Hood.

It's amazing how the UI approach to printing is just to deeply bury stuff. Chrome has a bespoke dialogue box to hide the system one. Which has a "More Settings." Which has a "Use System" button. Which has a "More Settings" Which has an "Advanced..." Five extra clicks to get to normal stuff.

"What if love was illegal? But make it straight," is literally one of the tropes from a funny old amateur/student bad movie pitch bingo card because it was such bad cliche overdone by people with no idea how to make a movie.

This is the end tag of the ad. "Demand Action" sounds good, doing it for "Wildfire Victims" sounds good, but of course the vague call to action in the flashy well produced ad is pushing a policy that will get a lot of people killed in the long run. Assholes. Exploitive assholes.

There's a crazy ad I have been seeing saying that "California needs a permanent fix to the wildfire crisis" but then it's just saying insurance should be cheaper, as if that would permanently fix any aspect of the problem, rather than make it worse.

1992 was a surprisingly... okay year for big VFX blockbusters. Compared to what came the year before and after, Death Becomes Her had no real competition. 88: Roger Rabbit 89: The Abyss 90: Total Recall 91: Terminator 2 93: Jurassic Park 94: Forest Gump 95: Babe 96: Independence Day

Trump's Super Duper Ultra fireworks display in DC is apparently about the worst air quality in the Eastern US. It got so bad you actually couldn't see the fireworks because of the smoke of the previous fireworks. But really, no worse than here in LA. Sigh.

Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 05/07/2026
The air quality is worse than from that warehouse fire, but we are doing it intentionally.

Huh... Either that sensor is just broken, which is entirely possible. Or something terrible is happening and WeHo air is about to get shitwrecked. Haven't seen a fire notification or anything there, so no idea which.

Air quality maps in LA are showing the current prevailing wind direction really well.

According to the graph on the Amazon Prime Video page, the UFC fight at the White House now has 100% five star reviews. So, only five star reviews are showing up and everything else is getting tossed. Leni Riefenstahl shit to create a fake reality. Unsure if it's controlled by Paramount or Amazon.

Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 18/06/2026
On Amazon Prime, they are promoting the UFC at the White House, but so far they are blocking all reviews and the graph indicates that nobody has reviewed it yet. Seems improbable for such a widely discussed show on the main page. Can't let any reality into the bubble, eh?

Look, Google... If I log into my email, and you are fucking up email so badly that my email is no longer the top priority of what you show me when I check my email, no there is no fucking chance that I want to pay you more for it. And that's even before we get to the lol fuck no AI.
A screenshot of GMail. But instead of emails, the thing shown immediately below the tabs is a giant ad for Try Gemini in GMail.

I am losing my mind at Rainn Wilson thinking a show that has multiple versions currently being made, couldn't be made today. Australia also had one in 2024. It wasn't even too edgy for fucking Saudi Arabia of all places. Wild conservative bubble brain rot. Just obviously wrong delusional shit.

There are more versions of The Office *currently* being made than when the US version came out. You couldn't make as much The Office back then as they do today.

I followed the "The Origin of the American Flag" JSTOR link that Wikipedia cited, and that has absolutely no indication of the origin of the quote. It's just asserted with no citation. Maybe the author in 1929 personally interviewed Washington using a time machine.

Not quite at crossover yet, but Nithya Raman is only about 1 point behind Pratt at this point so it seems likely that she may pull ahead in the count tomorrow. And extremely likely that she'll pull ahead before it's over. Whee.

From early returns, looks like our current maniac city attorney isn't even making it to the runoff. So she'll probably try to go absolutely nuclear with stupid bullshit between now and when she's kicked out if she's got nothing left to lose.

For as much advertising as there is in the modern world, it really amazes me how poorly made most of it is these days. This is a political ad that's just vague claims by a bored VO narrator over... some odd confusing stock footage of slicing up a purple rectangle? The state of rhetoric in 2026.

Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 28/05/2026
Why is the "New" so badly vertically placed in the highlight shape? They really just shipping this AI Inbox stuff out the door to end users without anybody even looking at it first?

The substitution font for cyrillic is the right color, but pretty far off in size/style. I get there won't be an easy exact match, but it's probably possible to find something horizontally squished as the fallback for stuff not in the OG styled font.

How is *this* now the icon for Google Sheets? Who thinks this is helping anything? It looks like a file got corrupted and the art for a grid half-loaded, and they shipped it by accident.

This dishonest anti-Raman attack ad that was presented as a fake "breaking news" article was paid for by the police. This shit just didn't fucking happen in the old days. Cops doing badly made political attack ads to pick the mayor still feels like a RoboCop gag ad.
010
Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 03/05/2026
I still feel very strongly that the police should not get paid in city money, then get to use that money trying to control city policy and effectively defeat the concept of civilian control over the people allowed to use violence. The army doesn't run presidential campaign ads, FFS.

If users were actually seeking out this feature, Google would be getting adequate engagement numbers without needing to put "AI Mode" in ten thousand point font, right?

Isn't it great that all software depends on cloud services these days? Gosh, it was so boring when you would just buy software on a disc, and then be able to use it forever after that, because you had bought it.
001
Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 28/04/2026
Google now sticking a "try now" button on... What? There's not even a name or description. They literally can't think of anything to say about what this is or how it would be useful to a user? What the hell am I even supposed to try? They just want random blind clicks to track & call engagement.

Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 26/04/2026
Lol, the Whitehouse correspondents dinner and the assassination attempt there are no longer even trending topics, apparently. It's crazy how normalized political violence has become.

Microsoft Edge's search now want to have an AI tell you what a page says about the search term. You know what would make it easy for me to see what a document says about it? THE FUCKING DOCUMENT'S TEXT, WHICH I TOLD YOU I WANTED TO SEARCH. AI shit being jammed into everything genuinely angers me.

I live in a strange spot in LA that weather refuses to touch directly. It comes close, but always goes around. Riding my bike today, there was thunder and dark clouds looming almost overhead facing one way, and perfect blue skies the other.

In Windows these days, if you try to make a service for "conversational agents" disabled, it just balks and says that's incorrect so it's impossible to disable. This is the sort of design decision that should render multiple people unable to get a job in the tech industry ever again.

According to recent research, despite all the hype about generative AI, editors ranked AI generative clip extension as the least important feature asked about by the survey. Almost nobody actually cares about it or was apparently asking for it, prob not worth developing. It's a small n, but still.

Another fun thing about the bare-fucking-minimum expectations of modern software. Reddit status claims 0 incidents, on a day when the log indicates that there were problems worth logging. So they can claim uptime when they know stuff wasn't working. Everything's wrong. Nobody cares.

Will Rosecrans @willrosecrans.com · 07/04/2026
I know there's bigger stuff going on right now. But it's always a bit of a thing to see an application has a robust test suite with tests all over, and then look at one of the actual tests and see literally everything is commented out. Great, now I have a lot of confidence I can use this.

"Balance of Terror," the episode that introduced the Romulans, explains very clearly that the Federation and Romulans shooting at each other was stupid and they would have been friends if there had been different circumstances. It's impossible to hear the ep and think shooting was the point.
screenshot of IMDB's quotes page for the episode, saying things like "leave any bigotry in your quarters. There's no room for it on the bridge" and the Romulan commander saying "in a different reality, I could have called you friend."

It's one of the few things the fandom doesn't have an obscure technical name for. You can literally just search for a "wesley crusher shirt" and still find them. Everybody will know what you mean.
