Wrote about the decline and fall of SCOTUSblog, which used to be the single best resource for Supreme Court stuff, and (thanks to some intervening crimes committed by its co-founder) is now a weird platform for conservative pundits to talk about what a good job the conservative justices are doing

I’ve done this sort of research before, so I can take a stab at it. Also, there is DNA testing available: myfruittree.cahnrs.wsu.edu

Well, if you find a suspected Fusca with larger then normal fruit, there'd be invested as well, as there's known accessions with blight resistance. Larger fruit would be beneficial to ingressing the resistance into domestica

I think it'd be unique enough to preserve to ask/offer. Is the fruit of typical size?

I do like them after some storage time, when ripe off the tree, Arkansas Black is dense, so it’d be good to throw at people 👌

In the States, Fedco and Raintree among others. Also, for the rare stuff you can’t find commercially, you can request scion from the USDA germplasm repository for apples in Geneva, NY. npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/s...

I'd be enjoying the Newtown Pippins this season, as more of orchards in the area are getting ripped out!

Can only get them in season. Trader Joe's usually has Lucy Glo. Definitely check specialty grocers or if you're in an apple growing region, farmer's markets.

No, they're only going to be grown in Washington state for some years yet.

I think the greater threat to Gravensteins in Sonoma county are vineyards.

Will Rea @willrea.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Honestly, if you're shopping at supermarkets, you're really going find the same few varieties, no matter where in the country you are. NC has growers of heirloom fruit, you might need to go to specialty grocers or farmers markets to try new varieties.

Ananas Reinette, if you can get it.

I love Mountain Rose for pies and tarts, if you can get them. Lucy Rose or Lucy Glo might have good texture in this use as well.

I believe one would be Annurca, mentioned by Pliny The Elder in 79 AD.

Check your local farmers markets if you're in an apple growing region. Small orchards are more likely to have some heirlooms growing.

I would say you need to take a look outside supermarkets for quality American cider. 99% of canned cider is made with bulk juice of concentrate. That being said, I love UK cider and perry.
