The materialist conception of history starts from the proposition that the production of the means to support human life and, next to production, the exchange of things produced, is the basis of all social structure; that in every society that has appeared in history, the manner in which wealth is

I think the paper is relevant far beyond the offshore wind industry, and that many of the arguments within it help to explain why the electricity grid, the rail network, and other essential infrastructures are in such a shambles across so much of Europe and the United States.

My recent paper in the Annals of the AAG is now in print! It explains why workers in the offshore wind industry in Germany have been striking, why some unions in the USA have been competing with one another, and what these struggles tell us about the class politics of the "energy transition".

It is precisely the alteration of nature by men, not solely nature as such, which is the most essential and immediate basis of human thought.

It's also a very particular type of 'economist thinking' because segmented labor market theory goes much further in explaining Southern whites' support for Jim Crow, especially in the context of the serial economic depressions and high unemployment conditions of the late 19th century South.

Good rebuttal of Rockhill’s conspiratorial reading of the Frankfurt School. What's missing is a discussion of Monthly Review’s longstanding disdain for the western working class and elite admiration for the political leadership of socialist states. Same old line, much less rigour — sad decline.

Beyond questions of energy and labour, the article returns to the “locality debate” on regional class alliances and seeks to revive the theory of "geographical industrialization" on new foundations. Those debates receded towards the end of the 1990s, but they're more relevant than ever before.

This article draws on a long period of research in Germany and the United States, and many conversations with my mentor James McCarthy.
It also owes a great deal to Guido Starosta, whose distinctive understanding of Chapter 10 of Marx's Capital helped me greatly in the analysis.

When that perception is widespread, you can't simply hand-wave that capitalism is the problem, as many "ecosocialists" are wont to do. The left has to organize where these layoffs are happening and mobilize alongside workers and their trade unions in defense of these kind of jobs.

But it doesn't make sense to simply blame Vestas - they're doing what any rational firm will do in this inverted world. The real guilt is with politicians in Copenhagen and Brussels who, day in and day out, actively decide against increasing state investment in the expansion of wind energy at sea.
