Starting the day off with some exciting ferry news: The first confirmed vessel for Jersey next year - Stena Vinga. It can carry 400 passengers and 200 cars. It also has a cinema. What more do you need? Summer timetables should be confirmed sometime this week.

Island Energy has released a statement that evacuations are a precaution while engineers undertake testing and repairs. They state: "Our engineers are currently on-site and working to locate and repair the gas escape." As far as I'm aware, leaked gas is not yet officially confirmed.

I mean if anyone wants to hear about the exciting local politics of the Channel Islands then I can happily provide (spoiler: the news is always ferries).

Andium Homes has confirmed that the building has no gas supply, but there are old gas pipes under the nearby roads. Island Energy have now begun drilling into the road.

I'm wearing my 'nerd of the office' badge with pride as I waffle on about Warhammer and Witcher games. But hey, when the opportunity presents itself...

Has anyone caught a glimpse of the Man of Steel himself in Jersey? Henry Cavill has taken a selfie outside The Little Shop in St Helier to celebrate the filming of a new Warhammer 40,000 Amazon series.

We gave a middling performance in the Channel Islands Holly Jolly Quiz for hacks and flacks - but still had great fun! Turns out sulphuric acid doesn't contain zinc... Thank you to organisers @cipr.co.uk

This, however, was rejected by 27 votes to 19 with no abstentions. Jersey's assisted dying law is now being drafted by officials and will come back to the States Assembly for final approval towards the end of 2025.

Island politicians also debated another route which would have brought eligibility for those who have been "diagnosed with an incurable physical condition that is giving rise to unbearable suffering that cannot be alleviated in a manner the person deems tolerable".

Jersey's propositions go a little further than England and Wales, as eligibility includes those with less than six months to live, or 12 months if they have a neurodegenerative condition. It was voted through by 32 votes to 14 with no abstentions.

In May 2024, politicians in Jersey voted to allow assisted dying for people with terminal illnesses, and it has been suggested that the UK's government may have used their plans as a sort of 'template' for their legislation. www.itv.com/news/channel...

UK politicians have voted in favour of allowing assisted dying in England and Wales. However, they were not the first to vote through this kind of legislation in the British Isles (small 🧵).

The decision day looms as Brittany Ferries confirms they're once again in the race. Will it be fully steam ahead for a connected Jersey-Guernsey ferry service, or has that ship sailed? All to be revealed by (hopefully) Friday.

And then the 'Following' page is totally clamped on a 'newest first' setting rather than relevance, making it a nightmare to meaningfully engage in content that's appropriate to us. Sigh.

Another factor that's making it harder to engage with people on X. Yes, other platforms do the same, but I would say engagement on quality content has become far lower on 'formerly twitter'.

It's now become more of a game of the public hearing how decisions were made and what happens next. Just today, Deputy Neil Inder revealed that DFDS' previous bid failed as the terms allowing them to raise fares and change schedules were 'unworkable' - I'm sure there's more to come out.

William Vincent @williamvincent.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
It's a good question - I think what the Bailiwicks have been told by both bidders remains pretty similar. But Jersey now believes any agreement with Brittany would effectively be a deal with Condor after an email from Brittany's CEO. However, Guernsey is pretty confident steaming ahead with them.

A British pensioner whose bland sandwiches gained him unexpected fame in China has died. Keith Brown, a retired engineer known on Chinese social media as
"Old Dry Keith", became a hit when his Chinese wife Zhang Jian began to post videos of him assembling the ham and cheese sandwiches he liked to eat. Chinese observers were grimly fascinated by his dry, boring sandwiches, and his gentle, stoic manner - and he built up a cult following. "We go from questioning the dry old man, to understanding the dry old man, to becoming the dry old man," observed one cultural commentator.
"The old man is us, and his dry lunch is our dry life."

Twitter does seem to be hamming up the content farm-y accounts but I've already got Reels and YouTube to waste my time with 😅 I love the honeymoon period of creating a new account and following all your favourite people again

Also as a conversation starter, what have been your musings with recent Twitter content? One reason I'm making a semi-switch is the sheer volume of AI content on my 'For You' page (along with my last 80+ followers being bots). Does Bluesky feel more real to you?

Brief Bluesky intro: I'm a journalist in the Channel Islands, working more digitally nowadays (bar when 'stranded passenger' is needed)! I was already a latecomer to 'bird app' so I'll give Bluesky more of a go posting ITV content along with some personal interests... maybe arts and crafts idk...
