Kudos to neighbours Tammi and Luis Hernandez who spotted the first hatchlings emerging from the nest and alerted a member of the WLCC.

Another Snapping Turtle Hatching: Story & photo/Video by Dr. Melanie Dobson The WLCC is happy to report the successful hatching of 35 more baby snapping turtles last evening (Sept 21st) from a second nesting site near Williams Lake.

Good news on Williams Lake water quality! We are happy to report that E.coli levels returned to non-detectable in water sampled by WLCC volunteers in late August...

COMING SOON: The Night of the Snapping Turtles Members of the WLCC, neighbours, and friends were honoured to attend the births of over 50 snapping turtles, an endangered species, on the night of September 10th at Williams Lake. A full story with pictures and videos will be posted. More later!

Around this time of year we get "visitor ducks". This is a hooded merganser, or what I'd call a "Christmas bauble-head." 🙂

Colleen Jone's CBC item was shared widely on social media and drew much needed attention to the fallling levels at Williams Lake. Her efforts were in no small part responsible for the public awareness that has resulted in the work now being taken to replace the failing dam. /1

The Shaw Wilderness Park – Trail Temporarily Closed When: March 17 to 31, 2025. Time: Work is during daylight hours. Where: The trail from the parking lot to the dam will be closed. Why: To prepare for the rebuild of the Williams Lake dam.

backlandscoalition.ca?page_id=7331 Nature Conservancy of Canada/HRM have not yet made a formal announcement about the “Etu’qamikejk Trail” in the SWP (Shaw Wilderness Park)* but the signs have been up for a few months. Here’s some info. about the name and the place.
