TBF, Starlink looks like a pretty good deal these days... (ducks behind sofa)

Same thing happened to me, I switched to Zen, not the cheapest, but they don't have the same price escalator most other providers have. That was what caught me out with BT, I didn't realise the price escalator doesn't stop at the end of the contract.

Even an LLM chatbot will tell you that. 😊

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Nope, what is termed reasoning, in chatbots at least, is an iterative application of the statistical model. That's all.

They are nothing like the AIs depicted in Neuromancer.

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Don't agree. No-one writing about the "AI threat" seems able to do so without hyperbole and anthropomorphism. And apparently no-one writing about the AI threat understands that there is no reasoning underlying LLMs (AI is a misnomer). They are statistical models of their training data, that is all.

More confirmation (if needed) that the campaign is working?

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Yes he is. The tech bros are afraid of the competition, not their LLMs. They want to use regulation to stop the Chinese and large public corporations (Google, Meta etc) from overtaking them. That's why Altmann abandoned his IPO.

Also noteworthy, Jacob Coxon's Wikipedia page now appears to have been deleted. The argument was, ironically, that he wasn't a noteworthy individual...

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
This seems plausible to me. Hypothetically though, if these three are genuinely afraid of something and seek regulation to control it, it is probably competition from China and large public corporations like Google, MS and Apple that they fear, not human extinction.

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Meanwhile Wikipedia is discussing deleting the article about Jacob Coxon, because he doesn't seem to be what the news articles imply he is (a notable AI researcher).

platiosolar.com How about solar pavement as a possible solution? Not mainstream yet, but I can imagine it soon will be.

These are good points. However, it is worth remembering that electricity is currently less than a quarter of UK's energy budget. Transport and heating are the bulk of it via gas and oil. These will electrify, we will need nuclear in my opinion.
010
Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I agree, but the chart is a little misleading as it ignores nuclear. This one is more relevant.
Graph showing carbon intensity of electricity for a selection of countries. Showing good progress for UK. Brazil and France are better however.

I think @aarros.bsky.social in your replies pretty much summarises what LLMs are good for. I also think we should call them what they are, LLMs, not AI, because that's what they are; large statistical models of the data they were trained on. There's no logic, rationality, thought or comprehension.

Doomed to fight, destined to win. Stay positive! 😊

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
A good test is to use the Google translate app to translate the phrase "Pogacar is destined to win the tour de France" into Ukrainian, and then translate the result back to English. Apparently, he is doomed.
120
Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Disclaimer: I do not speak Ukrainian. I do speak English, however. It seems that Ukrainian does not have separate words for 'doomed' and 'destined', the translation would therefore depend on the context, the obvious choice would be 'destined', as the context seems to be positive.

Bill @williamfrith.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
I think it may be destined, not doomed? Grok isn't that great at translation...

Also, a split system a/c is a very efficient means of heating your home as well. More efficient than heat pumps connected to your radiators.

I dunno, seems more likely than people doing it at this rate. But of course, that would require people inventing "conscious AI". Which is only slightly more likely...

Glad you found it! Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava! Am I the only one to think it's weird that they've also excluded cadets? First thought: they've run out of cadets as well. Second thought: there will be no army personnel there, just FSB and SBP people in different uniforms.
